King Harald V of Norway, a cousin of Britain’s King Charles III, has passed away at the age of 89. His death was announced on Friday, August 28, following a period of hospitalization and a subsequent decline in his health. The Norwegian Royal Court confirmed that the King died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet at 6:35 am.

A Long Reign Marked by Duty and Family

Born on February 21, 1937, Harald V ascended to the throne on January 17, 1991, becoming Europe’s oldest reigning monarch after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. His reign spanned over three decades, during which he became a familiar figure on the European royal stage.

King Harald’s life was shaped by significant historical events, including the invasion of Norway by Nazi Germany when he was just three years old. This led to his family’s exile, with his mother and sisters first seeking refuge in Sweden before they all relocated to the United States for the duration of the Second World War. His father and grandfather remained in Norway, supporting the resistance efforts, before eventually joining the government-in-exile in London.

The royal family returned to Norway in June 1945, following the war’s end. However, tragedy struck in 1954 when Harald’s mother, Princess Martha, died of cancer. He was only 17 at the time. His grandfather, King Haakon VII, passed away in 1957, making Harald the heir apparent at the age of 20.

Education and Royal Marriage

Before assuming the throne, Harald pursued higher education, studying at the University of Oslo and graduating from the Norwegian Military Academy in 1959. He furthered his studies in England, attending Balliol College, Oxford, where he studied Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from 1960 to 1962. During his time in England, he also developed a passion for rowing.

It was at his graduation ball that he met Sonja Haraldsen, the woman who would become his wife. Their relationship faced initial opposition from the Palace due to her status as a commoner. However, Harald remained steadfast in his commitment, and the couple eventually married in Oslo Cathedral in August 1968. Their union produced two children: Princess Märtha Louise, born in 1971, and Crown Prince Haakon, born in 1973.

Royal Duties and Health Challenges

King Harald V was known for his dedication to his role and his active participation in public life. He represented Norway in sailing at three Olympic Games: Tokyo in 1964, Mexico City in 1968, and Munich in 1972. He also maintained close ties with other European royal families, including his cousin, King Charles III.

In recent years, King Harald’s health had been a subject of public attention. He was treated for haemolytic anaemia, a condition where red blood cells are destroyed more rapidly than they can be produced, leading to fatigue and breathing difficulties. He also underwent surgery to have a pacemaker fitted in 2020 after experiencing a similar health issue while on holiday in Malaysia.

Despite these health challenges, King Harald had consistently stated his intention to reign for life, having sworn an oath to the Norwegian Parliament. He had been hospitalized on several occasions, including for an infection and dehydration in Tenerife in February, and for a blood infection requiring antibiotics in August. His health had reportedly deteriorated over the weekend preceding his death.

A Legacy of Service

King Harald V’s reign saw Norway develop into a modern, prosperous nation. He navigated the complexities of the modern monarchy, balancing tradition with the evolving expectations of society. His commitment to his country and his family defined his public life.

The King is survived by his wife, Queen Sonja, his son Crown Prince Haakon, and his daughter Princess Märtha Louise, along with his grandchildren. The passing of King Harald marks the end of an era for Norway, leaving behind a legacy of duty, resilience, and unwavering service to his nation.
