Hayden’s dedication to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is more than just a casual interest; it’s a driving force that has led him and his family on an extensive tour of the nation. The family’s mission to visit every ABC bureau began to take shape after Hayden met one of his favorite presenters, Nate Byrne, at the Perth Royal Show in October of the previous year. Since then, Hayden has successfully visited 36 out of the ABC’s 56 locations nationwide, a remarkable achievement that underscores his commitment.
The journey, which has spanned nearly two years, originated from their home in New South Wales. The primary objective was to honor Hayden’s deep affection for the ABC by experiencing its presence across the country. Hayden’s father, Phil Eastbury, explained the deeper purpose behind their travels. “Travelling around Australia, a lot of people can find a bit of a theme, you know, visit national parks, or see the ‘big things’. But our theme has been finding purpose for Hayden through the ABC,” Phil shared. He elaborated that the family also sought a different approach to managing the demands of therapy. “We also kind of felt as a family a bit ‘therapy-ed’ out, if I’m honest, so we thought what better way to seek new opportunities, and develop a lot of what we learnt through therapy, we can take it out on the road and apply that out in the community.”
These visits have proven instrumental in Hayden’s personal growth. Phil noted that the interactions have significantly boosted Hayden’s confidence, particularly in his ability to ask and answer questions. This development is crucial as Hayden harbors aspirations of one day working for the public broadcaster himself.
One particularly notable encounter was with Leigh Sales, known for her work on programs like ‘Australian Story’ and ‘The Assembly,’ where she mentors journalism students, including those on the autism spectrum. Such interactions provide Hayden with valuable insights and experiences relevant to his career ambitions.
Celebrating Milestones and Favorite Moments
This week marks a special occasion for Hayden as he celebrates his 18th birthday. In honor of this milestone, many of his favorite ABC presenters, whom he watches daily, have sent him birthday wishes from across the country. When asked about his most memorable bureau visit, Hayden pointed to Perth as his clear favorite. “My favourite bureau I’ve loved, I think, is Perth because it’s a good one,” Hayden stated. He particularly enjoyed using Pamela Medlen’s desk and interacting with the weather wall managed by Tabarak Al Jrood, showcasing specific elements that made the Perth visit stand out.
Understanding Fragile X Syndrome and Disability
Fragile X syndrome is a genetic condition resulting from a mutation in the X chromosome, which can lead to a diverse range of intellectual, physical, and behavioral challenges. Wendy Bruce, Executive Director of the Fragile X Association of Australia, commented on the resonance of Hayden’s story.
Ms. Bruce highlighted how Hayden’s journey exemplifies innovative ways families can support children with disabilities in pursuing their passions. “I think it has helped to deepen people’s understanding that everyone with a disability is unique; they all have different strengths, abilities, challenges, and that leads to needing different support needs,” she explained. The interactions Hayden has had across Australia offer a broader perspective on living with Fragile X syndrome and other disabilities, emphasizing the potential for deep community engagement.
The visits have also inspired other families facing similar circumstances. The Kalgoorlie ABC team in Western Australia provided Hayden with a unique opportunity to step into the role of a radio presenter, demonstrating the inclusive spirit of his tour. Ms. Bruce added that Hayden’s experiences have encouraged others to consider alternative paths, or as she put it, to take “the road less travelled.”
