Legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke, who celebrated his 100th birthday in December, continues to prioritize physical fitness and mobility. In a recent social media video, the beloved actor was seen utilizing an inversion table, demonstrating a commitment to staying active and encouraging his followers to do the same with the hashtag ‘keep moving’.

A Commitment to Movement

The video captured Van Dyke, distinguished by his white hair and beard, suspended upside down, engaging in stretching and spinal decompression. His feet were elevated while his head hung, showcasing a unique approach to maintaining flexibility. The scene was set to the song ‘Keep Stretching’ by Moonspatz, adding a lighthearted yet purposeful tone to the exercise.

This display is consistent with Van Dyke’s well-documented dedication to a rigorous fitness regimen. He is known to frequent the gym up to three times weekly, incorporating weight machines, circuit training, and targeted stretching, with a particular emphasis on abdominal exercises to support his core strength.

Even when requiring a walker for recent public appearances, as seen during an outing with his wife, Arlene Silver, Van Dyke’s approach to movement remains dynamic. Witnesses, including actors Ted Danson and singer Rick Springfield, have noted his tendency to transition between gym equipment with a dance-like gait rather than simply walking.

Celebrating Milestones and Longevity

Van Dyke’s 100th birthday was a significant occasion, marked by a surprise flash mob organized by his wife, Arlene Silver. Family and friends joined in a celebration at their Malibu home, dancing to a medley of his most famous songs. Silver described the event as ‘perfect’ and expressed her joy at seeing Van Dyke so happy.

The actor has often attributed his enduring health and longevity to lifestyle choices made in his 50s, specifically giving up cigarettes and alcohol. He recounted this during a fundraising event for The Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and The Dick Van Dyke Museum, where he also shared a personal anecdote about his acquaintance with Walt Disney.

Van Dyke recalled knowing Disney before the animation pioneer’s death in 1966, describing him as a ‘wonderful guy’ who unfortunately ‘smoked too much.’ While his son, Barry Van Dyke, suggested his father never smoked excessively, Dick Van Dyke himself admitted to a past struggle with an addictive personality.

‘I smoked a lot, actually!’ Van Dyke confessed. ‘I think I was probably in my 50s before it dawned on me that I had an addictive personality. If I liked something, I was going to overdo it. So I got rid of booze and cigarettes and all that stuff, which is probably why I’m still here.’

Reflections on Aging and Friendship

Despite his active lifestyle and evident vitality, Van Dyke has spoken candidly about the emotional challenges of aging. He expressed feelings of loneliness and frustration stemming from outliving many of his close friends. The physical limitations associated with advanced age also impact his ability to participate in social events and professional opportunities.

In an article for The Times, Van Dyke shared, ‘Though I still do guest spots on TV, and ads and videos, I miss going to the studio every day for a regular series. And every single one of my dearest lifelong friends is gone, which feels just as lonely as it sounds.’ He further elaborated on the difficulties, stating, ‘It’s frustrating to feel diminished in the world, physically and socially.’

The demands of travel for work or social engagements have become prohibitive, leading him to decline invitations for events in distant cities. Consequently, most of his interactions with friends and family now take place at his home.

Maintaining Vitality Through Exercise

Van Dyke’s continued engagement with physical activity, such as his use of the inversion table, underscores his proactive approach to health. This method, which involves hanging upside down, is often used to relieve back pain and improve flexibility by decompressing the spine.

His routine, which includes weight training and stretching, is a testament to the belief that consistent exercise is key to maintaining mobility and quality of life, regardless of age. Van Dyke’s dedication serves as an inspiration, highlighting the importance of ‘keeping moving’ as he advocates.

The actor’s career spans decades, marked by iconic roles in productions like ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show.’ His enduring presence in the entertainment industry, coupled with his commitment to personal well-being, continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Van Dyke’s philosophy on health and aging, emphasizing both physical activity and mental resilience, offers valuable insights for individuals seeking to maintain an active and fulfilling life. His message, reinforced by his actions, is a powerful reminder of the benefits of a consistent and adaptable approach to fitness.
