The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s planned 2027 Costume Institute exhibition, “John Galliano: Horizons,” has been cancelled. The decision follows a statement from the British designer himself, who indicated that “it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.” The exhibition was intended to celebrate Galliano’s significant four-decade career in fashion. However, both the designer and the museum faced considerable opposition regarding the appropriateness of a retrospective for a figure whose legacy is intertwined with deeply offensive racist and antisemitic remarks.
A Transformative Career in Fashion
John Galliano, a graduate of London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins in 1984, quickly established himself as a groundbreaking force in British fashion. His early work, including his 1984 graduate collection “Les Incroyables and Les Merveilleuses,” drew inspiration from post-French Revolution aesthetics and set a precedent for his signature narrative-driven shows. Galliano consistently transformed his runway presentations into elaborate theatrical productions, with models embodying distinct characters. This innovative approach to fashion shows became a hallmark of his career.
His influence extended to the highest echelons of luxury fashion. In 1995, Galliano made history as the first British designer to lead a French Haute Couture house when he was appointed creative director of Givenchy. He then moved to Dior in October 1996, a role he held until his dismissal in 2011. During his tenure at both Givenchy and Dior, as well as at his own eponymous brand, Galliano elevated the concept of a fashion show into a grand spectacle. He often made theatrical bows at the end of his shows, dressed in elaborate costumes reflecting the collection’s theme, such as a matador or an astronaut.

In February 2011, while in a Paris bar, Galliano was reported to have made egregious racist and antisemitic slurs, including allegedly calling patrons a “fucking ugly Jewish bitch” and a “fucking Asian bastard.” A separate video surfaced showing him expressing admiration for Hitler. These events were further brought to light in the 2024 documentary “High & Low: John Galliano.”
Following these incidents, Galliano was convicted in a French court for “public insults” based on origin, religion, race, or ethnicity. At the time, he attributed his actions to addiction to alcohol, sleeping pills, and Valium. In the years since, Galliano has publicly apologized, spoken about his struggles with addiction and recovery, and sought to rebuild his career. He worked with Maison Margiela until 2024 and has more recently collaborated with fast fashion brand Zara on reinterpreting existing designs.
However, any discussion of Galliano’s career today inevitably circles back to the 2011 events, highlighting the enduring impact of his offensive remarks.

The controversy surrounding John Galliano is inextricably linked to the Met Gala. The annual event serves as a global media spectacle, closely tied to the Costume Institute’s major spring exhibition. Anna Wintour, global editorial director of Vogue and a Met museum trustee, has overseen the gala since 1995 and has consistently supported Galliano. She described his decision to withdraw the exhibition as “very courageous and a measure of the man he is,” reflecting her long-standing advocacy for the designer. Wintour was instrumental in facilitating his return to the fashion industry through a residency at Oscar de la Renta’s studio in 2013. De la Renta himself lauded Galliano as “one of the most talented men” he had ever encountered, emphasizing his belief in second chances for talented individuals.
The Met Gala has previously faced criticism for its exhibition choices. In 2023, the announcement of Karl Lagerfeld as the focus of the exhibition sparked backlash due to his history of controversial, offensive remarks. The most recent gala in May also drew criticism for its co-chairs and sponsors, tech billionaires Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez.
