Robert Pattinson, who portrays Chris Hansen in the upcoming biopic Primetime, has offered a measured response to critical remarks made by the real-life host of To Catch a Predator. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival to a seven-minute standing ovation, delves into the controversial legacy of Hansen’s groundbreaking sting operation show.

Pattinson’s Perspective on Hansen’s Reaction

Speaking at a press conference following the film’s premiere, Pattinson expressed his hope that Chris Hansen would appreciate the cinematic portrayal. “Obviously, I hope he likes the movie,” Pattinson stated, as reported by Variety. He further elaborated on his admiration for Hansen’s enduring impact, suggesting that the inspiration Hansen’s character has provided over the years should be seen as a form of compliment. “There’s something electrifying about him. I would hope the amount of inspiration his character has given a lot of people for years is some kind of compliment.”

Pattinson also reflected on the unique magnetism of Hansen’s on-screen persona, noting that even after extensive viewing of the show, there remains an indefinable quality that contributed to its lasting resonance. “There’s something magnetic about his presence. I watched the show when I was younger and didn’t think about it,” Pattinson shared. “There’s a strange alchemy — something he’s doing is the reason people are still talking about that show 20 years later. It’s not to do solely with the subject matter. It was something about the show that was groundbreaking, but then he’s someone centering it. There’s something, even after watching literally thousands of hours of it, you can’t put your finger on it.”

Chris Hansen’s Initial Criticisms

Prior to the film’s debut, Chris Hansen, 66, had voiced his reservations about the project and Pattinson’s casting. In an appearance on the podcast Serialously With Annie Elise, Hansen questioned the motivations behind Hollywood’s decision to produce a film about him, stating, “We don’t know, but I’ll find out.” He also characterized Pattinson’s performance in the film’s trailer as “overly dramatic” and expressed a degree of dissatisfaction with the casting choice, remarking, “I didn’t get to choose my own guy.”

Despite his criticisms, Hansen acknowledged that his family found Pattinson’s imitation to be quite accurate. He also revealed that he was scheduled to view the film privately, indicating that his final judgment would be reserved until after seeing the complete movie. “Until I see the full movie, you know, I as a reporter, it’s sort of silly for me to talk about something that I haven’t seen yet – so I’m going to see it,” he said. “Then I’ll be able to tell you whether I like it or don’t like it, and how dramatized it is.”

Hansen further explained his preference for another actor, Denis Leary, to portray him, had discussions about a film adaptation of To Catch a Predator materialized years earlier. He emphasized that his focus has been on his ongoing work as the real Chris Hansen, leaving little time to concern himself with the fictionalized version.

The Legacy and Controversy of ‘To Catch a Predator’

To Catch a Predator was a segment featured on Dateline NBC, where Hansen employed adult decoys posing as minors to lure and expose individuals suspected of intending to commit child sexual abuse. The show, which ran until 2007, concluded under a shadow following the suicide of one target, Bill Conradt, as law enforcement, accompanied by Hansen’s camera crew, approached his residence.

Throughout its run and in its aftermath, the program faced scrutiny regarding its ethical underpinnings, particularly concerning the balance between investigative journalism, law enforcement objectives, and the demands of entertainment programming. Each episode typically involved luring a subject to a predetermined location under the guise of a sexual encounter with a minor, only for Hansen to reveal the setup as a sting operation, with authorities ready to make an arrest.

‘Primetime’: A New Look at a Controversial Figure

Directed by Lance Oppenheim, known for his documentary work such as Some Kind of Heaven and Spermworld, Primetime marks his first foray into fictional feature films. The movie, which also features Anna Faris and Phoebe Bridgers in its cast, is slated for a theatrical release on September 25.

Pattinson’s portrayal of Hansen in Primetime arrives at a time when the methods and impact of To Catch a Predator continue to be debated. The film’s reception at Venice, marked by a significant standing ovation, suggests a strong audience and critical interest in exploring this complex chapter of television history and the figure at its center.

Conclusion

As Primetime prepares for its wider release, the dialogue between Robert Pattinson’s portrayal and Chris Hansen’s own reflections highlights the enduring fascination and controversy surrounding the show. Pattinson’s respectful yet analytical approach to embodying Hansen, coupled with Hansen’s cautious anticipation of the film, sets the stage for a compelling examination of a television phenomenon that left an indelible mark.
