Australian sporting stars Mary Fowler and Nathan Cleary face the significant challenge of maintaining their relationship amidst demanding international careers, with the couple revealing they see each other only about twice a year. Fowler, a forward for the Matildas and England’s Manchester City, and Cleary, a halfback for the Penrith Panthers in the NRL, navigate extensive travel and time differences that often keep them continents apart.

The Realities of Long-Distance Love in Elite Sports

The emotional toll of prolonged separation is a constant factor for Fowler and Cleary. In a candid discussion, Fowler shared that they have consciously moved away from expressing how much they miss each other, as such sentiments can intensify the difficulty of their time apart. “Even with Nathan, it’s gotten to a point where we don’t really want to say that we miss each other because it makes it harder,” Fowler explained. “Because then you think about it. It’s stuff like that, where you both kind of have to adjust to being apart.” This approach highlights the pragmatic adjustments required to sustain a relationship under extreme circumstances.

The couple’s demanding schedules mean that even planning visits requires a delicate balance. Fowler indicated that they avoid making concrete plans for reunions, acknowledging that the disappointment of cancelled arrangements can be particularly hard to bear. This strategy aims to mitigate potential emotional setbacks, allowing them to adapt more fluidly to the unpredictable nature of their professional commitments.

Building Connection Through Conversation and Shared Activities

Despite the physical distance, Fowler and Cleary have cultivated a strong connection primarily through communication. Fowler noted that the long-distance aspect has necessitated a deep reliance on talking, which she believes has been instrumental in fostering the relationship’s growth. “Something that we both really appreciate about the long distance is that our form of connection has had to be through talking for much of it,” she said. “I think that’s really enabled the relationship to grow on a nice foundation of just being friends first.” This emphasis on friendship and open dialogue forms a core element of their bond.

They ensure they always have topics to discuss, ranging from significant life events to everyday occurrences. “We always have stuff to talk about, even if it’s just random things. I do think that helps in the long run, just being really good friends,” Fowler added. This continuous engagement helps bridge the geographical gap and maintain a sense of shared experience.

An Informal Book Club for Shared Moments

To further enhance their connection, Fowler and Cleary have established an informal book club. This shared activity allows them to engage in a common pursuit simultaneously, even when separated by thousands of miles. “Being able to find things where we can connect from afar really helps,” Fowler stated. “Just to feel like, ‘Oh, he’s there with me in a way.'” The simple act of reading the same book provides a tangible sense of togetherness.

Fowler described the feeling: “When I read my book, I’m like, ‘This feels nice because I know he’s going to be reading his book too.'” This initiative demonstrates their proactive efforts to create shared experiences and maintain intimacy despite the physical constraints of their careers.

Career Milestones and Future Uncertainties

Fowler’s comments arrive as speculation continues regarding Nathan Cleary’s future with the Penrith Panthers. The star playmaker has postponed a decision on extending his contract beyond the 2027 season, opting to deliberate after the 2026 NRL finals series. Should he not reach an agreement before November 1, he will be eligible to negotiate with rival clubs for the 2028 season. Reports have linked him with lucrative offers, including a potential $1.5 million annual deal from the newly formed PNG Chiefs, and earlier speculative interest from English Super League club Hull KR.

Cleary has emphasized his desire to take his time with this significant decision, citing a series of demanding periods, including the NRL’s Origin series, that have occupied his focus. “It’s a big decision, and I feel like one thing has rolled into another,” he commented. “The Origin period was so hectic, and when we came out of it, we weren’t playing our best footy. My mind has just been elsewhere.” He also acknowledged the potential impact of his younger brother, Jett, rejoining the Panthers, describing it as “something to weigh up.”

Fowler’s Return and Olympic Aspirations

Meanwhile, Mary Fowler has made a successful return to action with Manchester City following a significant ACL injury sustained last year. She resumed playing in February and has been managing her minutes carefully. Fowler expressed confidence in her recovery, stating, “I’m feeling like myself.” She also spoke about the positive team environment at City, characterized by healthy competition and mutual support among players in her position.

Looking ahead, Fowler is focused on regaining peak form for upcoming international tournaments, including the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. She reflected on her experience at the Paris Olympics, where pressure affected her performance, leading to a “very below-average tournament.” This lesson has reinforced her commitment to playing with freedom and mental clarity.

Navigating Love and Career at the Highest Level

The relationship between Mary Fowler and Nathan Cleary serves as a compelling example of the sacrifices and strategic adaptations required by elite athletes. Their ability to maintain a strong bond through dedicated communication, shared activities like their book club, and mutual understanding of each other’s demanding careers underscores their resilience. As both athletes navigate critical junctures in their professional lives, their commitment to nurturing their relationship from afar remains a testament to their enduring connection.
