As Edinburgh’s vibrant festival buzz fades, Scotland’s theatre scene is gearing up for an exciting autumn season, promising a rich tapestry of performances across the nation. From thought-provoking dramas to hilarious comedies, a diverse range of productions are set to captivate audiences. Here’s a look at some of the most anticipated theatre shows gracing Scottish stages this fall.

Revivals and New Interpretations Take Center Stage

Several productions offer fresh perspectives on established works, alongside revivals of acclaimed plays. Pitlochry Festival Theatre presents ‘Wiping My Mother’s Arse,’ a dark farce by Iain Heggie, originally staged in 2001. This rewritten sitcom-style play delves into complex family dynamics within a care home setting, exploring secrets and lies with a sharp, satirical edge reminiscent of Joe Orton.

‘Irvine Welsh’s PORNO,’ an adaptation of the celebrated author’s sequel to ‘Trainspotting,’ is touring various venues including Albany in Greenock and Eden Court in Inverness. Davie Carswell’s adaptation revisits the iconic characters fifteen years after the original novel, focusing on Renton’s return to Leith. This stage version brings Welsh’s distinctive voice and gritty realism to a new format.

Dundee Rep and Pitlochry Festival Theatre are co-hosting ‘A History of Paper,’ a play by the late Oliver Emanuel, featuring music by Gareth Williams. This intimate production, which began as a radio play, stars Alan Cumming and Shirley Henderson, exploring themes of love, loss, and memory.

Classics and Contemporary Hits on Tour

Tony Roper’s enduring comedy, ‘The Steamie,’ is embarking on a national tour, with stops at Dundee Rep, Ayr Gaiety, and His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen. Set on a 1950s Glasgow New Year’s Eve, the play captures the camaraderie and humor of women gathering in a local washhouse. Its blend of relatable characters and sharp wit has cemented its status as a modern classic, appealing to both long-time fans and new audiences.

George Orwell’s seminal dystopian novel, ‘1984,’ receives a contemporary staging at Citizens Theatre in Glasgow and Dundee Rep, with a script by playwright Chris Hannan. Directed by Dominic Hill, this co-production with the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh tackles Orwell’s chilling vision of a totalitarian future, with Jack Tarlton as Winston Smith and Jessica Hardwick as Julia.

Matthew Zajac’s deeply personal solo performance, ‘The Tailor of Inverness,’ is set for a Scottish tour, beginning at the Macphail Centre in Ullapool. The play recounts his father’s journey from Galicia to Inverness, offering a poignant exploration of exile and identity. Originally developed with the Dogstar company, this acclaimed piece has traveled internationally.

New Voices and Bold Productions

Cora Bissett’s play ‘The Singer,’ featuring new songs by KT Tunstall, is touring after a successful run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Playing at venues like the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen and Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, the production tells the story of a disillusioned musician who finds renewed inspiration through an alliance with a deaf artist.

Samuel Beckett’s iconic absurdist play ‘Happy Days’ is being presented at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, starring Siobhan Redmond and Forbes Masson. Directed by Roxanna Silbert, the production features Redmond as Winnie, a woman buried up to her waist in sand, reflecting on her life in a performance that promises to be a tragicomic exploration of endurance.

The innovative theatre company Groupwork presents ‘When Prophecy Fails,’ a study of faith and belief inspired by a 1950s UFO cult. This touring production, which played at the Edinburgh International Festival, uses a fusion of text, dance, and film to examine the psychological impact of disillusionment.

Finn den Hertog directs a new production of the classic Greek tragedy ‘Antigone’ at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow. Based on Lulu Raczka’s acclaimed version, the play stars Eilidh Loan as Antigone, who defies authority to bury her brother following civil war, exploring themes of duty, law, and morality.

Martin Sherman’s new play, ‘I’ll Be Seeing You,’ at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, imagines a posthumous encounter between entertainer Liberace, played by Simon Russell Beale, and a young writer. The play, penned by the Tony Award-winning Sherman, challenges perceptions of fame and celebrity.

Finally, Rob Drummond and Dave Hook’s ‘Wallace,’ a hip-hop reimagining of Scottish history, has been scaled up for a national tour. Directed by Orla O’Loughlin, this energetic production offers a dynamic and contemporary take on historical narratives, appearing at venues like the Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock and the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow.

Conclusion: A Season of Diverse Theatrical Experiences

This autumn’s theatre offerings across Scotland present a compelling mix of classic revivals, contemporary adaptations, and bold new works. Audiences can expect a season rich in storytelling, performance, and thematic depth, reflecting the vibrant and evolving landscape of Scottish theatre.
