An incident aboard an American Airlines flight from Dallas to Newark on Thursday night saw an Arizona realtor, Layne Arthur Lundeen, 67, duct-taped to his seat after an alleged aggressive outburst. The flight was diverted to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) where Lundeen was removed and arrested. The alleged cause of the disruptive behavior, according to the passenger seated next to Lundeen, was a heated discussion about religion.

The Mid-Flight Altercation

The dramatic events unfolded on an American Airlines flight when Lundeen, a realtor from Tucson, Arizona, reportedly began a tirade that included homophobic and racist remarks. Fellow passengers intervened, restraining Lundeen with duct tape to his first-class seat. The plane was subsequently diverted to Baltimore for Lundeen’s removal.

Maryland Transportation Authority Police arrested Lundeen, charging him with disorderly conduct and second-degree assault. He was later released on a recognizance bond. The FBI Baltimore Field Office is reportedly investigating the in-air incident.

Seatmate’s Account of the Trigger

Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, an author known for his interpretations of biblical prophecy and current events, has come forward with his account of the events. Cahn, who was seated next to Lundeen, claims the altercation stemmed from a two-hour conversation about their respective religious views. Cahn described the initial discussion as “friendly” before a sudden and dramatic shift in Lundeen’s demeanor.

According to Cahn, Lundeen became enraged in a “split second,” allegedly cursing at Cahn and at God. Cahn stated that Lundeen, whom he believed had consumed a few drinks, expressed rejection of Christianity following a divorce and feeling judged by other Christians. Cahn recounted attempting to offer encouragement, referencing Jesus’s interactions with religious hypocrites.

Escalation of the Incident

The situation reportedly escalated when Cahn began discussing his personal experiences with faith. Cahn alleges Lundeen’s demeanor changed drastically, becoming aggressive. “His face changed, his voice changed,” Cahn stated, recounting Lundeen’s alleged expletive-laden outburst directed at him and his faith.

Cahn claims that Lundeen then grabbed him by the throat and pushed him. He also alleges that Lundeen made vulgar comments towards a male flight attendant and used racial slurs against a Black flight attendant, though Cahn stated he did not specifically hear the racial slur himself. Cahn also reported that Lundeen threatened him, saying, “I’m gonna punch your f***** Jewish face in.”

Further escalating the confrontation, Cahn alleges Lundeen attempted to grab his laptop, which displayed the cover of Cahn’s new book, “The Altar of Pergamon.” During a struggle for the laptop, Cahn claims Lundeen broke the device and aggravated an existing injury to Cahn’s arm. Cahn described the turn of events as “demonic” and felt he was in danger.

Passenger Intervention and Aftermath

The disruptive behavior prompted intervention from other passengers. Juan Mejia, a retired police officer, and Richard Olenick, a store manager, were instrumental in restraining Lundeen with duct tape. Olenick corroborated Cahn’s account, stating Lundeen had struck and grabbed his seatmate.

American Airlines confirmed the flight diversion was due to a “disruptive customer,” emphasizing their commitment to safety and zero tolerance for violence. The airline commended their crew and thanked passengers for their understanding.

Professional Repercussions

Following the incident and the viral spread of video footage, Layne Arthur Lundeen was terminated from his position at Long Realty in Tucson, Arizona, where he reportedly held the role of vice president. Kevin Kaplan, CEO of Long Realty, issued a statement confirming Lundeen’s affiliation with the company had been promptly ended, stating his alleged conduct was inconsistent with the company’s values of professionalism, integrity, and respect.

Rabbi Cahn’s Perspective

Rabbi Cahn, who has previously courted controversy with his views, stated he does not intend to pursue legal action against Lundeen. He expressed hope for Lundeen’s recovery, suggesting the realtor was “out of control” and perhaps unaware of his actions. Cahn has previously drawn attention for linking biblical prophecy to world events and commenting on societal issues.

Maryland Transportation Authority Police confirmed the presence of a passenger restrained with duct tape and zip ties upon their arrival. They reiterated the charges against Lundeen and noted he was medically cleared for an arm wound before being taken into custody. The investigation into the mid-air events is ongoing.

Conclusion

The incident on American Airlines flight 1727 highlights the challenges faced by flight crews and passengers dealing with extreme passenger disruption. While the exact sequence of events and motivations remain subject to investigation, the account provided by Rabbi Jonathan Cahn points to a volatile religious discussion as the catalyst for the aggressive behavior that led to the flight’s emergency diversion and the subsequent arrest of Layne Arthur Lundeen.
