Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti has offered a unique and colorful description of new signing Nick Woltemade, comparing the German striker to a Friesian horse following his promising debut against AC Milan. The 21-year-old forward, on loan from Newcastle, made an immediate impression after entering the match in the 75th minute.

Woltemade’s Impactful Juventus Debut

Trailing 1-0 against AC Milan, Juventus introduced Woltemade, who nearly found the net shortly after coming on. Though his shot attempt in the penalty area went high, he later won a crucial free-kick in stoppage time. This set piece led to Federico Gatti’s dramatic header, securing a vital point for Juventus in Serie A.

Spalletti’s Vivid Horse Comparison

Following the match, Spalletti elaborated on his assessment of Woltemade, drawing a parallel to his own Friesian horse. “What type of horse is he? I have a Friesian, he seems very similar to me,” Spalletti told Tuttosport. He continued, describing the horse’s characteristics that he sees in the player: “He is statuesque, he inspires a bit of fear from a physical point of view and then he is very sweet and lets himself be stroked and ridden.”

The Juventus manager further explained the analogy, highlighting the duality of Woltemade’s presence on the field. “He becomes very good also in relations with his teammates. He’s good at holding his own physically, and ever since I met him, he’s been smiling constantly. He’s so happy to be here, and that’s already a big thing.”

Understanding the Friesian Horse Analogy

Friesian horses are renowned for their striking appearance, typically featuring an all-black coat, a long, flowing mane and tail, and feathered legs. They are often perceived as majestic and powerful, yet also gentle and responsive to their handlers. Spalletti’s comparison suggests Woltemade possesses a similar blend of imposing physical presence and a tractable, approachable demeanor.

Player’s Versatility and Joyful Demeanor

Spalletti also lauded Woltemade’s technical abilities and versatility. “With Nick you can play the ball on his feet, he knows how to play horizontally and can also be used vertically because he has this physicality and this height,” the coach noted. He emphasized the rarity of finding a player with both physical attributes and strong relational play.

“Usually it is difficult to find these two worlds in the same player,” Spalletti explained. “The two-metre-tall one is a finisher perhaps in the area but then he is less relational on the pitch, but instead he has both things and then he has this great quality of being very joyful and very festive also in the way he behaves on the pitch.” This suggests Woltemade can be both a physical presence in attack and a positive, engaging teammate.

Woltemade’s Premier League Background

Woltemade arrived at Juventus on a season-long loan for a reported fee of £3.5 million, with no option or obligation to buy. His previous stint in the Premier League with Newcastle showed flashes of brilliance, particularly early in the season. He scored four goals in his first five appearances but experienced a dip in form, managing only one more goal from mid-December onwards.

Integrating Premier League Experience

Spalletti acknowledged that Woltemade’s adjustment to a new league will take time but believes his Premier League experience will be beneficial. “I can help him in the pressure he will encounter at this club, even if we start with an advantage because he has the same colours he wore in the previous team (Newcastle),” he stated. “I told him that we were waiting for a player of this level and this quality.”

The coach sees Woltemade as bringing valuable attributes from England’s top flight. “He brings with him the context of the Premier League, where everything is more physical, faster, and more determined in terms of game situations. Bringing a bit of Premier League into our team raises our level. We’re happy.”

Newcastle’s Squad Situation

Meanwhile, Newcastle United, who brought in winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo for £51.4 million on deadline day, have not yet signed a direct replacement for Woltemade in the center-forward position.

Conclusion

Luciano Spalletti’s colorful comparison of Nick Woltemade to a Friesian horse underscores the player’s unique combination of physical presence, technical skill, and positive attitude. As Woltemade settles into his loan spell at Juventus, his blend of Premier League experience and inherent qualities is expected to bolster the Italian side’s squad.
