A significant new phase in the extensive redevelopment of the National Library of Ireland (NLI) has commenced this month, marking a crucial step forward for the historic Dublin institution. Government approval has been granted for the refurbishment of the West Wing, a prominent section of the building that faces Kildare Street. This approval allows the project to move forward to the tender stage, paving the way for construction to begin.

Government Backs West Wing Redevelopment

Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, has officially confirmed the government’s endorsement of this vital project. The redevelopment of the Kildare Street campus is identified as a cornerstone of the Minister’s investment strategy for National Cultural Institutions, as outlined in the National Development Plan. This initiative aims to modernize and enhance the facilities available to the public and researchers at the NLI.

The announcement has been hailed as an “important milestone” in the ongoing efforts to preserve and modernize the National Library of Ireland. The West Wing, which has served as a storage area for the library’s vast collections since 1890, is set to undergo a dramatic transformation. For the first time in its history, this section of the building will be made accessible to the public.

Transforming Heritage into Public Space

Minister O’Donovan expressed his enthusiasm for the project’s potential, stating, “The West Wing project will restore this historic heritage building and transform it into an exciting exhibition, education and visitor engagement space that will showcase the library’s unique collections.” He further elaborated on the planned enhancements, which include the addition of a glazed, sound-proofed visitors’ gallery. This gallery is designed to offer views overlooking the main Reading Room, widely considered the most iconic space within the NLI.

The Minister emphasized the inclusive nature of the redevelopment, noting, “This project will enable the National Library to serve audiences of all abilities, from children and families to scholars and researchers, supporting lifelong learners and the culturally curious of all ages.” The project will be financed by the Department of Culture and will be managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW) in collaboration with the National Library of Ireland.

Securing the Future of a National Institution

Minister of State Kevin Moran, who oversees the Office of Public Works, also welcomed the advancement of the project. “I welcome this significant milestone to progress the redevelopment of the National Library of Ireland to tender stage,” Moran stated. “Today marks an important step in securing the future of this iconic national institution.”

Moran highlighted the OPW’s commitment to the project: “The OPW is proud to play a pivotal role in delivering a project that will not only protect and enhance this much-loved amenity but will also ensure that the library is fit for purpose for future generations to come.” He added that the redevelopment is expected to yield improved facilities for both staff and visitors, while simultaneously ensuring the safeguarding of the invaluable collections and heritage housed within the historic structure.

Enhanced Public Access and Experience

Dr. Audrey Whitty, Director of the National Library of Ireland, underscored the profound benefits the redevelopment will bring to the public. “The redevelopment project will allow us display more of the national collections in new exhibition and learning spaces, giving people greater access to experience and enjoy the National Library of Ireland for generations to come,” she explained.

Dr. Whitty described the impending changes as the most substantial shift in the public’s interaction with the National Library of Ireland since its original opening on Kildare Street in 1890. The project aims to create a more engaging and accessible experience, allowing a wider audience to connect with the library’s rich historical and cultural resources.

Key Features of the West Wing Redevelopment:

  • Restoration of the historic West Wing building.
  • Transformation into public exhibition and education spaces.
  • Creation of a new visitor engagement area.
  • Installation of a glazed, sound-proofed visitors’ gallery overlooking the main Reading Room.
  • Improved accessibility for visitors of all abilities.
  • Enhanced facilities for staff and the safeguarding of collections.

The progression to the tender stage signifies a concrete commitment to revitalizing this cherished national landmark, promising a future where its treasures are more accessible and its facilities are modernized for the 21st century and beyond.
