The Miss Cable Beach competition in Broome, Western Australia, is challenging perceptions by emphasizing personal growth and inner confidence over mere physical appearance. While the event features a bikini round, organizers and past participants highlight that the contest has evolved significantly since its inception in 1991, offering a platform for women to build self-esteem and express their personalities.

Evolving Beyond Appearance

Francisca Henriquez, the 31-year-old recently crowned Miss Cable Beach 2026, initially felt hesitant about participating. Describing herself as naturally shy, she found that the supportive atmosphere and the energy of the crowd transformed her on stage. “I really love that energy around me,” Henriquez shared, noting how the cheers from friends helped her embrace an “alter ego” during the competition.

The Miss Cable Beach contest, held annually at Divers Tavern, has been a staple in the Broome community for over three decades. Saoirse Meally, the events coordinator at Divers Tavern, explained that the competition has adapted to modern sensibilities. “It’s not just all about the bikini and appearance, it’s about what’s inside the girl too,” Meally stated. She pointed out that the inclusion of more question-and-answer segments and a resort wear round provides contestants with greater opportunities to showcase their individuality and character.

Meally has observed firsthand the positive impact the contest has on participants. “I have seen women completely come out of their shells after competing,” she said. “After they’ve done it, they’re on a high for a week. Their perception of it completely changes.” This sentiment underscores the event’s focus on empowering women and fostering a sense of accomplishment.

Personal Journeys and Motivations

For Henriquez, who is originally from Chile and has lived in Broome for four years, the competition offered more than just a chance to compete. Her initial motivation for entering last year was to win the $10,000 prize money to help her mother visit Broome. She was pleasantly surprised by the contest’s inclusive and encouraging environment.

“For sure it’s about beauty, but also something deeper about how women feel about themselves,” Henriquez reflected. While the financial incentive was a factor, she emphasized the lasting personal impact of the experience. “I can see how proud I feel about myself.” This year, the prize money will support her visa application, aiding her goal of remaining in Broome.

Broader Context and Community Traditions

The Miss Cable Beach event runs concurrently with a “Mr Cable Beach” competition, indicating a broader approach to community engagement through similar events. While the landscape of bikini competitions across Australia has seen a shift towards more fitness-oriented events, traditional community gatherings like Miss Cable Beach and the Roebuck Bay Hotel’s Wet Tee competition persist in Broome.

The relevance of such events in contemporary society is a topic of discussion. Professor Ivanka Prichard, an expert in Body Image and Health at Flinders University, expressed initial reservations about bikini competitions, noting the potential for objectification when bodies are put on display. However, she also acknowledged the possibility of positive outcomes.

“But if it’s done carefully and there are a range of options for those competing, then I think that could be a positive thing,” Professor Prichard commented. This perspective aligns with the organizers’ efforts to ensure the Miss Cable Beach contest offers a multifaceted experience that goes beyond superficial judgments, focusing on the holistic development and confidence of its participants.

A Platform for Confidence and Community

The organizers of Miss Cable Beach are committed to fostering an environment where participants can grow, gain confidence, and feel celebrated for more than just their physical attributes. The event’s longevity and continued popularity in Broome suggest a strong community appreciation for its blend of tradition and evolution. By incorporating elements that allow for personal expression and by focusing on the internal journey of the contestants, the competition aims to provide a valuable experience that empowers women and strengthens community bonds.
