Fast Food Chains Embrace Specialty Drinks: A New Menu Trend

Fast food establishments across the UK are increasingly diversifying their beverage offerings, moving beyond traditional sodas and milkshakes to include complex, specialty drinks. This trend, characterized by barista-style creations and novel flavor combinations, is slowly becoming a staple on the menus of major chains, reflecting a broader shift in consumer expectations and a desire for more experiential purchases.

The Rise of the Specialty Beverage in Fast Food

While the fast food industry has recently seen a surge in chicken-centric offerings, with both new American brands entering the market and existing chains expanding their poultry selections, a parallel evolution has been occurring in their drink menus. This shift sees brands experimenting with beverages that were once the exclusive domain of coffee shops and dedicated drink retailers.

KFC’s Kwench: Targeting a New Generation

KFC has been at the forefront of this movement with its Kwench range, launched in the UK earlier this year. Aimed at a younger demographic, Kwench reimagines popular drink concepts with a focus on exciting flavors and unique textures. Leo Sloley, strategy and innovation director at KFC UK & Ireland, explained that the initiative was driven by a growing consumer demand for more from their beverages. “Little treat culture has gripped the nation, and we also can’t get enough novelty in our lives, which means we’re looking for exciting new flavours and something offering more of an ‘experience’, as opposed to just a basic drink to have with a meal,” Sloley stated. The Kwench menu features items like Strawberry Shortcake Krunch Shakes, Iced Tiramisu Lattes, and Cherry Boba Refreshers. According to Sloley, the range, now available in 600 KFC restaurants, has received a “fantastic” response.

Greggs and McDonald’s: Unexpected Entrants

The trend gained further traction when Greggs, a popular high street bakery, introduced matcha lattes to its menu. This move surprised many, given matcha’s association with wellness culture and its less conventional pairing with traditional bakery items like sausage rolls. The initial public reaction was one of bewilderment, with many questioning the bakery’s decision. McDonald’s soon followed suit, adding a Vanilla Matcha Frappé to its UK offerings during the summer. This beverage, described as a blend of matcha green tea flavor, sweet vanilla, and ice, topped with cream, was even dubbed “the drink of the summer” by some.

McDonald’s Expanding Beverage Horizons

McDonald’s has signaled a commitment to its “iced drink era,” showcasing a diverse range of beverages beyond its new matcha offering. The current UK menu includes items such as Frozen Strawberry Lemonade, Mango and Pineapple Smoothies, Caramel Iced Frappés, and Sprite Zero Fruit Innovations, which involve mixing Sprite Zero with various fruit syrups and serving over ice. New flavors, like Guava, are continually being introduced. Furthermore, the company has showcased innovative beverage concepts at its Worldwide Convention, including Horchata Dr Pepper and Swicy Peach Sprite Zero, hinting at potential future additions to menus, particularly in the US market where experimental “crafted” McCafe beverages are being developed to compete with established coffee chains.

Other Chains Joining the Beverage Revolution

The expansion of specialty drinks is not limited to KFC and McDonald’s. Dave’s Hot Chicken now offers a range of frozen drinks called Slushers, with both standard and “top-loaded” options featuring cream or popping boba pearls. Taco Bell has brought its US-exclusive Baja Blast, a distinctive turquoise Mountain Dew-based iced drink, to the UK. Popeyes has also indicated plans for new drink releases in the near future.

Expert Analysis: Why This Trend is Taking Hold

Food consultants suggest that fast food chains are tapping into a market that has already shifted its spending habits. Amir Mousavi, founder of Good Food Studio, notes that these chains are responding to where consumer spending has been moving. “It’s fun, and I get why it’s raising an eyebrow or two, but that’s less because these brands are genuinely ahead of the curve and more because we simply don’t expect it from them,” Mousavi commented. He likens the surprise to seeing an unexpected person adopt a new trend, where the novelty lies in the source rather than the trend itself.

The Influence of Niche Beverage Brands

Mousavi attributes a significant part of this trend to beverage brands like Blank Street, which have successfully transformed niche drinks into mainstream offerings. The widespread acceptance of spending considerable amounts on customized coffees and iced beverages, particularly in urban centers, has created a clear opportunity for fast food giants. These chains can leverage this demand by offering similar products at more accessible price points, catering to consumers who might be priced out or geographically limited from accessing specialty coffee shops.

‘Little Treat’ Culture and Standalone Occasions

The concept of “little treat culture” plays a crucial role. Beverages are increasingly viewed as standalone purchases, akin to snacks, rather than mere accompaniments to a meal. “These drinks sit in the space between spending zilch and buying a full meal. You don’t necessarily need to be hungry to buy one: you might be walking around town, meeting someone, or simply wanting to try something you’ve seen online,” Mousavi explained. For fast food companies, this represents a vital strategy to capture spending that might otherwise go to competitors. If customers are opting for an iced matcha or a flavored coffee from a different establishment instead of a traditional fast food dessert or drink, chains like McDonald’s and KFC must offer competitive alternatives.

Future Outlook and Strategic Considerations

The integration of more sophisticated drinks into fast food menus is seen as a sound commercial strategy. “Consumers are already demonstrating that they’re willing to spend more on interesting drinks, so chains would be crazy not to try to capture more of that spend themselves and create more buying occasions for their regulars,” Mousavi stated. He anticipates further innovation in premium drinks, featuring diverse textures and inclusions, as major chains aim to secure a larger share of these “in-between meal” spending occasions.

However, Mousavi also cautioned that this expansion will likely be a gradual process. Large chains tend to adopt new trends only after they have fully matured and become mainstream, ensuring a high probability of success. Furthermore, significant emphasis will be placed on cost engineering and processing to maintain healthy profit margins. This measured approach ensures that while innovation is present, it is implemented strategically and efficiently.

The evolving landscape of fast food beverages suggests a future where consumers can expect a wider variety of exciting and accessible drink options from their favorite quick-service restaurants, blurring the lines between traditional fast food and specialty beverage markets.
