Australian actor Liam McIntyre, known for his roles as powerful, often solitary figures, is stepping into the iconic boots of Marvel’s Wolverine in the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 game. This marks a significant moment for McIntyre, who once worked as an assistant manager at EB Games, a job that involved inspecting game trade-ins and selling new releases. The journey from retail to embodying one of Marvel’s most recognizable anti-heroes is a dream realized for the avid gamer and lifelong X-Men fan.

A Dream Role Realized

McIntyre’s path to playing Wolverine wasn’t immediate. He recalls not believing the opportunity was real for three years after being invited to audition. The role, initially described as “Rough Guy John”—a character defined by anger and sharp, knuckle-mounted blades—was an obvious, albeit unnamed, nod to the mutant known as Wolverine. For McIntyre, who grew up watching X-Men cartoons and is a dedicated gamer, this was an unparalleled opportunity.

The upcoming game, developed by Insomniac Games, is set to offer a more visceral and combat-focused experience compared to their previous work on the Spider-Man series. McIntyre’s prior experience in the demanding, gladiatorial combat of the TV show Spartacus: Vengeance proved invaluable. This background equipped him perfectly for the motion-capture sessions in Burbank, where he was tasked with delivering Wolverine’s signature guttural growls, terse dialogue, and ferocious roars.

Embracing the “Gruff Loner” Archetype

McIntyre has frequently been cast in roles that require him to portray “gruff, angry loners who wield violence to help people.” He muses on this recurring casting choice, questioning what it says about him as a person. For Marvel’s Wolverine, he collaborated closely with stunt doubles to meticulously craft the character’s distinctive, heavy-footed gait and his brutal, animalistic fighting style. This attention to detail aims to capture the essence of a character known for his ferocity and solitary nature.

The Unique Demands of Game Performance

While McIntyre has expanded his career into voice acting, the intense scrutiny of embodying both the face and voice of a comic book legend presents unique challenges. He likens the experience to his early days in theatre, particularly in intimate “black box” venues. The process requires a blend of stage presence and cinematic performance, demanding constant readiness for close-ups and specific directorial choices, all while performing in a form-fitting Lycra suit covered in reflective markers for motion capture.

The lines between film and high-budget video games are increasingly blurred, placing McIntyre in situations akin to those faced by Hollywood A-listers. Whether simulating crawls through burning buildings, engaging in combat with ninjas, or launching from a plane, the performance demands immense imagination. He notes the practical difficulties of motion capture, such as avoiding accidental Velcro contact or clanking against fellow actors while wearing large helmets, which can disrupt both audio and visual recording. Yet, he acknowledges that this is not entirely dissimilar to traditional filmmaking, where actors must mentally filter out the presence of numerous cameras and lights.

A Globetrotting Adventure with Familiar Faces

The game promises an expansive narrative, delving into the broader X-Men universe and exploring Wolverine’s complex relationship with characters like Jean Grey. The adventure will take players across diverse locales, including Canada, Tokyo, and the fictional island of Madripoor. This scope allows for a deeper exploration of the character’s internal conflicts and external battles.

Following in Hugh Jackman’s Footsteps

Fourteen years ago, McIntyre identified Hugh Jackman as his favorite actor. Now, he becomes the second Australian to portray the iconic Wolverine, a role indelibly linked to the Australian actor. Despite the weight of following such a beloved predecessor, McIntyre remains unfazed. He draws parallels to his American TV breakthrough, which occurred after the tragic passing of the original lead, Andy Whitfield, carrying forward the lessons learned from that experience.

McIntyre consciously avoids imitating Jackman’s portrayal, focusing instead on drawing inspiration from the source material. He cites Chris Claremont’s influential comic book runs and Cal Dodd’s vocal performance in X-Men: The Animated Series as key influences. While acknowledging the strong connection between Australians and the character, McIntyre suggests that while being Australian might help, it’s not a prerequisite for embodying Wolverine. He believes the Australian ethos—marked by a gruff, down-to-earth demeanor and a reluctance for accolades—aligns well with Wolverine’s character.

Capturing Wolverine’s Primal Rage

Wolverine’s barely contained rage is a central element of the game, amplified by an aggressive rage system that rewards players for accumulating kills with increasingly potent attacks and graphic violence. This intensity required McIntyre to record an extensive volume of agonized screams, roars, and grunts. He found himself needing to perform these strenuous vocalizations consecutively, often facing days dedicated solely to variations of “grunts, angry,” “grunts, perturbed,” and “grunts, confused.” He managed these demanding sessions with the aid of herbal remedies and vocal exercises, even employing a straw for practice.

To prepare for these intense recording sessions, McIntyre utilized vocal techniques, maintained a dedicated Wolverine playlist, and channeled the frustration of navigating Los Angeles’s notoriously congested freeways, particularly the 405. The game’s extended playtime, estimated at 15 to 20 hours for the main story, offers a rare opportunity for McIntyre to explore the character’s duality—the primal animal versus the man striving for betterment.

Navigating Glitches and Global Audiences

The transition from film to video games has brought unexpected challenges, including the player’s influence on the final experience and the occasional game glitch. McIntyre humorously recounts an instance where his character’s facial animations became the subject of internal jokes, particularly a bug that left his character unclothed while his iconic yellow costume remained in a previous room. He expressed concern about his likeness being captured and shared globally by players, a consequence he hadn’t fully considered when signing away his rights.

Despite these minor apprehensions, McIntyre remains in awe of his career trajectory. He reflects on his past as a bullied schoolchild, finding it difficult to envision achieving such significant milestones. He finds inspiration in Wolverine’s resilience, identifying the character’s true superpower not as his adamantium claws, but his unwavering capacity to endure hardship. “Just keep pushing,” McIntyre emphasizes, highlighting Wolverine’s ability to recover from setbacks as a quality he aspires to incorporate more into his own life.

Marvel’s Wolverine is now available on PlayStation.
