A 56-year-old father of three is presumed dead after falling from the Carnival Panorama cruise ship while sailing with his wife. Thomas Gigler was on the vessel with his spouse, Michelle, and their three sons, aged 13, 11, and nine, when he reportedly went overboard on Saturday. The incident occurred six days into their vacation, just ahead of what would have been their 15th wedding anniversary.

Man Falls Overboard During Cruise

The Carnival Panorama was en route from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to Long Beach, California, when the incident took place. Thomas Gigler, a resident of Redlands, California, is believed to have fallen from the ship’s 11th deck. His wife, Michelle, raised the alarm after realizing her husband was missing. She reportedly asked cruise staff to page him on Saturday morning. Announcements were made repeatedly until the ship began its turnaround between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Passengers reported hearing Gigler’s name broadcast over the ship’s public address system for several hours as efforts to locate him intensified. At 3:30 p.m., passengers were instructed to return to their rooms to allow staff to conduct a ship-wide search, which included checking cabins and scanning identification. Despite these measures, Gigler could not be found.

Carnival staff reviewed security camera footage, which confirmed that Gigler had gone overboard. The ship was sailing off the coast of Baja California at the time. With no sign of him in the surrounding waters, the vessel continued its journey. The search for Gigler has been handed over to local authorities, with the U.S. and Mexican Coast Guards continuing their efforts. He is now presumed to have died.

Background of Thomas Gigler

Thomas Gigler, 56, was a computer programmer who had spent his entire 24-year career with the software firm Esri. He and his wife, Michelle, 48, were celebrating their upcoming 15th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, just four days after his disappearance. The couple resided in Redlands, California, and were parents to three young sons. Family photos show them living what appeared to be a happy life, including a moment in March 2020 where they showed support for local teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gigler is not believed to have communicated his intentions to anyone before going overboard. The exact reason for his fall remains unknown, adding to the tragedy of the situation.

Family’s Reaction and Theories

Gigler’s family expressed bewilderment and grief over his death. His sister, Wendy Dowden, stated that the family believed he had no reason to take his own life and insisted that his marriage was in good condition. She suggested that the family suspected he may have experienced a psychotic break, despite no prior history of mental illness.

“We think something must have happened in his head. He wasn’t in his right mind to have done this,” Dowden commented. This theory contrasts with a claim made by a fellow passenger who met Gigler at the ship’s Alchemy Bar the night before his death. This passenger suggested Gigler had spoken about marital issues. However, Dowden refuted this, asserting that her brother and his wife were “getting along quite well.”

A passenger who stayed in a cabin near the Giglers noted that the family was on the second deck, meaning Thomas Gigler would have had to climb nine decks to reach the 11th deck, from where he is believed to have fallen.

Ship’s Response and Ongoing Search

Carnival confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that the ship’s team followed established procedures upon being notified of a missing guest. This included reviewing CCTV footage and alerting both the U.S. and Mexican Coast Guards. The Coast Guard conducted aerial searches of the area, and the Mexican Navy and nearby commercial vessels also participated in the search efforts. Carnival stated that Gigler’s family was offered support services.

The Carnival Panorama departed from Long Beach on September 13 for a week-long voyage along the Mexican Riviera and returned on Sunday morning. Passengers on board reportedly assembled tributes for Gigler, writing well-wishes on Carnival shopping bags and leaving duck figurines, a tradition known as ‘Duck Mail’ on cruise ships.
