ARC Raiders achieved strong initial success following its October launch, but recent developments signal growing dissatisfaction among players. On Steam, the game’s overall review rating has shifted from ‘Very Positive’ to ‘Mostly Positive,’ driven by a surge in critical recent feedback.
PvP and PvE Design Sparks Player Frustrations
Recent Steam reviews pinpoint issues with the game’s PvP and PvE balance as the primary concerns. One player, who logged over 400 hours and unlocked all 50 achievements, captured the mixed feelings: “I can honestly say that I love and hate this game at the same time. PvE players feel tricked and betrayed, while PvP players often get shamed and harassed by the people they turn down before finishing them off. A lot of PvP players don’t even enjoy the experience because dealing with constant insults and accusations just isn’t fun. Neither side ends up happy.”
Another reviewer highlighted evolving PvP tactics, noting that players now often hide in dark corners to ambush others. “If you enjoy meaningful progression and skill-based encounters, stay away,” the review stated. “Until the developers address the way PvP incentivizes this ‘infamous’ behavior, the game is just a waste of time.”
These complaints intensify due to the game’s permadeath mechanics, where items brought into matches or looted during play are lost permanently upon defeat. Early balance favored newcomers, but high-level players with superior gear now dominate, souring the experience for many.
Player Numbers Decline Sharply
The rising negativity correlates with a steep drop in concurrent players. Daily averages fell from 235,000 at the month’s start to around 130,000 recently.
Competition from Marathon Emerges
Bungie’s newly launched extraction shooter, Marathon, appeals more to PvP enthusiasts with its intense gameplay. The title maintains steady numbers at nearly 50,000 daily concurrent players, though no clear migration from ARC Raiders is evident yet.
