HBO confirms that Craig Mazin, showrunner of The Last of Us, will lead a live-action TV sequel to the acclaimed game Baldur’s Gate 3. Developers Larian Studios hold no involvement in the project.
About Baldur’s Gate 3
Set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, Baldur’s Gate 3 delivers an epic role-playing adventure. Players guide a group of adventurers seeking a cure for a brain-infecting parasitic tadpole. Amid the medieval fantasy realm of the Forgotten Realms, the story unfolds with themes of fellowship and betrayal, sacrifice and survival, and the temptation of ultimate power.
Launched in 2023, the game swept every major Game of the Year award. Larian Studios later abandoned plans for a direct sequel or expansion, shifting focus to two new original titles, including the recently revealed Divinity.
Details of the TV Series
IP holders Wizards of the Coast commit to extending the Baldur’s Gate narrative. The upcoming series serves as a direct continuation, picking up immediately after Baldur’s Gate 3’s events. Old and new characters grapple with the consequences of the game’s conclusion.
Craig Mazin takes on roles as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner. He plans to contact the original voice actors for potential participation.
“After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of the Coast created,” Mazin stated. “I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”
Larian Studios remains uninvolved. Swen Vincke, Larian’s leader, shared on social media: “Crazy that a story that started out in a small hotel conference room eventually evolved into a narrative inspiring enough for it to become an HBO series. The endings of Baldur’s Gate 3 were created so they could serve as narrative soil for new adventures. There’s plenty of directions they could go. I’m eager to find out which ones Craig and his team will pick. He’s reached out for a chat so we’ll have the opportunity to tell him our thoughts.”
