A 23-year-old YouTuber from Birmingham’s Kingstanding area recently embarked on his inaugural international journey to Egypt, celebrating his birthday amid ancient wonders and persistent hustlers. Jacob Williams, a proud local known as a Brummie vlogger, captured the experience on his channel, Brumtown UK, which boasts over 25,000 subscribers. His footage highlights both the exhilarating highs and frustrating lows of solo travel abroad.
Marvels of the Pyramids
Jacob relished the iconic Pyramids, describing them as a “breath of fresh air” that far surpassed Birmingham’s BT Tower. The ancient structures provided a stunning change of scenery, offering a profound sense of adventure during his first venture outside the UK.
Challenges with Taxi Drivers and Scammers
However, the trip included tense encounters with aggressive scammers. When Jacob requested a taxi to the Pyramids, the driver diverted him to a family-run business promoting horse rides. After prolonged haggling and an unwanted tea offer plus shop tour, Jacob escaped. A second attempt succeeded, but similar issues arose with an Uber driver who canceled the ride, demanded cash, and charged more.
Jacob Williams shared his insights: “I wanted to showcase this first experience and I did it solo. It gave my audience, people who resonate with me, a chance to join me on this journey for my first ever holiday.” He acknowledged the economic pressures: “I already knew the scammers were going to haggle me, I’m aware our currency rate is stronger. They can spot tourists and I can understand it’s a hustle… but there’s a way to go about it.”
Reflecting on the incidents, he added: “It’s forceful to an extent. I didn’t want to call them scammers, but they were taking advantage, that’s a scam.”
Future Travel Plans
Despite the hurdles, Jacob plans more adventures. After polling his followers, many suggested Pakistan as his next destination. The West Midlands remains a key backdrop for his content, but global explorations beckon.
