On the morning of February 11, 2012, ahead of Clive Davis’s prestigious pre-Grammys gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, R&B star Brandy Norwood woke with an unusual sensation—a hot, radiating itch in her throat. This eerie feeling, unlike typical hoarseness, filled her with foreboding that would soon prove tragically accurate.
The Rehearsal Encounter
Brandy, who rose to fame in the 1990s with her powerful vocals and starred alongside Whitney Houston in the 1997 remake of Cinderella, prepared to perform “It All Belongs to Me” with Monica—their first collaboration since the Grammy-winning “The Boy Is Mine.”
Whitney Houston arrived explosively at the rehearsal, damp from a recent swim, exuding energy mixed with unpredictability. “Baby girl!” she called to Brandy, watching the duo run through their classic hit before giving a quick thumbs-up and departing.
About an hour later, Houston returned with her daughter, Bobbi Kristina. Amid whispers from onlookers, she slipped a crumpled note into Brandy’s hand, whispering, “This is for you,” followed by a tender kiss on the cheek.
The Private Note’s Mystery
The note’s contents remain private, a sacred keepsake of their bond. Brandy explains that after sharing so much publicly, she cherishes this untouched piece of their connection.
A Three-Hour Phone Conversation
That evening, Brandy called Houston, unsure which version of her mentor would answer. They spoke for three hours, reminiscing, laughing, crying, and praying. Houston offered reassurance amid Brandy’s career pressures, her raspy laugh and terms like “baby” and “sweetie” evoking brighter days.
Houston discussed returning to the studio and her role in the Sparkle remake. Reflecting on past struggles—including a troubled marriage to Bobby Brown and battles with addiction—she promised, “I’m gonna be better. You’ll see. This is just a season, not the whole story.”
The Tragic Discovery
The next day, as Brandy headed to the hotel despite her unresolved throat issue, the atmosphere grew heavy. At 3:45 p.m., news broke: Houston was found unresponsive in a bathtub at 3:35 p.m. Paramedics pronounced her dead 20 minutes later at age 48. The cause was accidental drowning, with coronary artery disease and cocaine as contributing factors.
Brandy’s mother delivered the devastating call during makeup preparations. Overwhelmed, Brandy collapsed in sobs.
Performing Amid Grief
Shockingly, the gala continued. Brandy attended in gown and makeup, surrounded by industry figures offering condolences before celebrating. “I just talked to her yesterday,” she confided to Monica. “She was going to be better. She promised.”
Brandy recounts these events in her memoir Phases, published March 31.
