Michael Carrick confirms Manchester United have no intention of selling Bruno Fernandes, emphasizing the club’s determination to retain the 31-year-old midfielder as he nears another Premier League record.
Fernandes provided two assists in United’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, bringing his season total to 16. This leaves him just four assists short of the league record shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. The Portuguese star also became only the third United player in the Premier League era to achieve 100 combined goals and assists.
Fernandes’ Future Amid Contract Speculation
Questions surround Fernandes’ long-term future following his December interview in Portugal, where he suggested United considered selling him last year but lacked the resolve to inform him. His contract includes a £57 million release clause for foreign clubs. United’s potential return to the Champions League may sway him to stay.
Carrick’s Firm Stance on Retention
Carrick addressed the speculation directly, stating, “Bruno’s definitely not someone we’d want to lose, I can say that. He’s important for us and he’s definitely one we wouldn’t want to lose.”
He highlighted Fernandes’ consistent impact: “Bruno has done it for a long period of time now, in the big moments and making the difference, whether scoring or creating he’s normally around it. Two very different [assists] today.”
Carrick praised Fernandes’ chemistry with teammates, including Casemiro and Jonny Evans on set pieces: “He has a really good understanding with Case and working with Jonny on the set plays. They’ve got a great connection there.”
Record Chase and Team Focus
With eight games left, Fernandes needs four assists to match the record or five to break it outright. His recent form includes eight assists in the last 10 matches, positioning him as a top contender for player of the season.
Carrick downplayed the personal milestone: “I’d much rather the points and us win than that. It’s not something you go chasing for; it happens naturally.” He stressed team balance: “He’s important for us… but it’s not just about Bruno. Sharing that responsibility makes everyone else’s job easier.”
