Cheltenham Festival Heartbreak
Legendary racehorse Envoi Allen collapsed and died shortly after completing the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival. The 12-year-old three-time Festival winner faltered while walking back to the stables. Racecourse veterinarians provided immediate care, but they could not save him. This marked his planned final race before retirement, dimming the excitement of the week.
Gold Cup Outcome
Willie Mullins’ Gaelic Warrior secured a decisive victory in the Gold Cup. Jockey Paul Townend rode the winner after two-time champion Galopin Des Champs was withdrawn from the contest. Envoi Allen competed bravely in his last outing, but the effort proved overwhelming.
Remarkable Eight-Year Career
Envoi Allen amassed an illustrious record over eight years, including ten Grade 1 triumphs. Under trainer Gordon Elliott, he claimed his debut Grade 1 in the 2019 Champion Bumper. He followed with two more Grade 1 wins later that year.
In March 2020, he triumphed in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle—now known as the Turners Novices’ Chase—at Cheltenham by 4¼ lengths. Two-time Grand National winner Davy Russell partnered him to victory.
He entered the 2021 Festival as the 4-9 favorite but fell, snapping his streak of 11 straight wins under rules.
One bettor, with Envoi Allen as the final leg of an accumulator, partially cashed out £250,000 from a £5 stake.
Success Under Henry de Bromhead
After switching to Henry de Bromhead, Envoi Allen returned to the Cheltenham winners’ enclosure in 2023. Rachael Blackmore guided him to Ryanair Chase glory, defeating Shishkin.
He finished second to Dan Skelton’s Protektorat in 2024 and third in the 2025 Ryanair. In November 2025, he captured a record third Down Royal Champion Chase, adding to prior wins in 2022 and 2024.
Envoi Allen’s contributions endure as a highlight of National Hunt racing.
