Major UK supermarkets including Tesco, Lidl, Asda, and Sainsbury’s report shortages of fresh produce due to heavy rains and flooding in key growing regions. Shelves remain bare for items like strawberries, raspberries, avocados, and peppers after weeks of adverse weather damaged crops in Morocco and southern Spain, primary winter suppliers for the UK.
Affected Produce and Supermarkets
Soft fruits such as strawberries face the greatest impact, with raspberries also scarce at chains like Morrisons and Lidl. Avocados and peppers prove difficult to source across major retailers. Additional shortages strike purple sprouting broccoli, bok choi, and citrus fruits, which growers cannot harvest amid persistent downpours in Spain.
Weather Impact in Supplier Regions
Large areas of southern Europe, particularly Andalucía in Spain, and northern Morocco endure unusually heavy rainfall and storms this season. January in southern Spain recorded some of the highest totals since 2001, with floods persisting into February. Andalucía serves as Europe’s primary winter fruit and vegetable hub, supplying tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, berries, avocados, and citrus during the UK off-season. Morocco bolsters northern European markets with berries and vegetables.
Expert Insights and Retailer Response
The Fresh Produce Consortium warns that limited supply may lead to price hikes as markets adjust. It urges shoppers to stay aware but avoid panic buying, which could worsen availability and inflate costs. “Shoppers may see price increases as the market adjusts to limited supply. We urge consumers to be aware, but panic buying will only make matters worse,” the consortium stated.
Andrew Opie, director of food and sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, notes that retailers actively mitigate disruptions. “Difficult weather conditions in Southern Europe and Northern Africa have impacted the harvest for some crops. However, food retailers are adept at managing disruption and will take all necessary measures, including sourcing from alternative sources, to minimise any impact on customers,” Opie said.
Control buying manager Caroline Dodds highlights tighter availability of Mediterranean vegetables overall. “There is tighter availability of Mediterranean veg in general as they are not growing as quickly due to lower light levels,” Dodds explained.
Outlook for Shoppers
Retailers source alternatives to ease the strain on customers. Conditions should improve as growing seasons shift and supplies from other regions increase later in the year. Shoppers receive advice to refrain from stockpiling to maintain steady availability and stable prices.
