Arsenal’s lackluster performance in the Carabao Cup final has handed Manchester City a significant morale boost in the Premier League title chase, according to former Gunners winger Freddie Ljungberg.
City Secure Comfortable Victory
Nico O’Reilly emerged as the standout performer, netting two headers to guide Manchester City to a 2-0 win over Arsenal at Wembley. The Gunners struggled to mount a challenge, particularly after halftime, delivering a disappointing display on the grand occasion.
City broke the deadlock on the hour mark when goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga fumbled Rayan Cherki’s cross, allowing O’Reilly to steal in front of Martin Zubimendi and head home from close range. Just four minutes later, Matheus Nunes delivered a precise cross from the right, and O’Reilly powered in another header from the edge of the six-yard box, beyond Kepa’s reach.
Mikel Arteta introduced Noni Madueke, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Jesus in a bid to spark a comeback, but Arsenal could not close the gap. This marks the Gunners’ record seventh runners-up finish in the League Cup, while City claimed their fifth title under Pep Guardiola and ninth overall.
Arteta Reflects on Defeat
Arteta expressed his disappointment post-match, stating, “It’s a hard one to take. It’s very sad, especially for our players and our supporters because we know how much it means to them, and how much we want it. The fact we haven’t managed to deliver that and obviously it’s disappointing.”
On selecting Kepa ahead of regular starter David Raya, Arteta explained, “I have to do what I think is right, and I think we have an understanding keeping on Kepa. He played all the competition and I think it would have been very unfair to him and the team to do something different. Errors are the power of football, and today, unfortunately, it happened at a crucial moment.”
Ljungberg’s Title Race Warning
Ljungberg highlighted the potential shift in momentum, noting, “It is a blow. The talk of the town, that’s Arsenal. Arsenal are the new ones coming in. They are doing amazing in the Champions League, it was the quadruple, everything was going their way. Manchester City had a Champions League run, they’ve been heavily criticised, but all of a sudden, they demolish Arsenal a little bit.”
He added, “It was 2-0, they had the ball all the time and I think it’s going to be hard for them. I think they feel they’re going to win the league but if you look at this here, they’re going to go to the Etihad and I would imagine City would be like, ‘We’ll take three points there!’ Of course there’s a break now but then they probably need to go clean because if City now gears up and goes clean…”
Upcoming Challenges and Standings
Arsenal now regroup for an FA Cup quarter-final against Southampton following the international break, followed by a Champions League quarter-final clash with Sporting and a Premier League home game versus Bournemouth on April 11. The top two sides meet again at the Etihad on April 19, offering Arsenal a chance for revenge.
Despite the setback, Arsenal maintain a nine-point lead at the Premier League summit after City’s recent 1-1 draw with West Ham.
