Chaotic confrontations erupted in downtown Los Angeles on Friday evening as demonstrators, waving Mexican and American flags and donning gas masks, clashed with law enforcement officers.
Police Issue Dispersal Order Amid Rising Tensions
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) issued an urgent dispersal warning shortly before 9 p.m., directing all protesters gathered near Union Station to leave the area within 10 minutes. As officers moved in to enforce the order, they encountered resistance, with demonstrators hurling bottles and rocks at the line of police.
LAPD officials reported on social media that the situation intensified, leading to the arrest of several individuals described as violent agitators. Among those detained was one person accused of using a slingshot to fire hard metal objects at officers positioned along the frontline.
Arrests Confirmed and Calls for Peace
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass confirmed during a Friday press conference that five people were taken into custody during the disturbances. She emphasized the importance of maintaining order, stating that such protests play a crucial role but must remain non-violent to effect meaningful change.
“I think the protests are extremely important, but it is equally important for these protests to be peaceful, for vandalism not to take place,” Bass said. “That does not impact the administration in any kind of way that is going to bring about any type of change.”
Bass further noted that outbursts of violence could play into the hands of the current administration, potentially provoking further retaliation.
Demonstrations Target ICE Raids
The unrest stemmed from widespread demonstrations demanding an immediate halt to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids across the city. Protesters marched outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles, voicing opposition to the ongoing operations and calling for immigration policy reforms.
