Margot Robbie channels Y2K-era Kylie Minogue in a striking new Chanel handbag advertisement launched on Monday. The 35-year-old Hollywood star pays tribute to the 57-year-old Australian icon by recreating scenes from Minogue’s famous 2002 music video “Come Into My World.”
Visual Homage to a Classic
Director Michel Gondry, who helmed the original video, returns for this Chanel spot. Multiple versions of Robbie navigate a soundstage designed to mimic a Parisian street, mirroring the innovative in-camera effects from the music video. Each duplicate carries a distinct Chanel 25 handbag in various colors and sizes, with a bookstore replacing the original laundromat.
Minogue makes a cameo appearance in a window, dressed in pink to echo her video look, as Robbie waves to her.
Margot’s Admiration for the Original
Robbie recalls watching the video as a child and admiring its clever trickery. “I remember watching it as a kid and thinking it was so cool and clever – the in-camera trickery he’s so famous for,” she shared. She jokingly described the ad as her way of portraying Minogue on screen without singing and disappointing fans.
Biopic Rumors and Endorsement
The advertisement nods to earlier speculation about Robbie portraying Minogue in a biopic. Minogue had publicly endorsed the actress as ideal for the role amid talks of a potential film following her Netflix documentary deal.
During a radio interview, Robbie expressed surprise upon learning of the endorsement. “She did not?! Why has nobody ever told me this before?! That is wild information,” she exclaimed. Flattered but firm, she declined: “I am beyond honoured. Of course, I could not. I can’t sing like Kylie.” Robbie emphasized her aversion to actors taking musical roles without strong vocals.
An Aussie Bonding Moment
Robbie shared details of her first meeting with Minogue, which occurred over cocktails at Los Angeles’ Chateau Marmont. Minogue’s team arranged the casual hangout. “I thought it was going to be about work or a charity thing,” Robbie recalled. “But she just said, ‘You’re an Aussie, I’m an Aussie, we should hang out.’ And then we just got drunk together.”
