A poignant memorial scene in the latest episode of the Yellowstone spin-off Marshals doubles as a tribute to Cole Brings Plenty, the late nephew of actor Mo Brings Plenty.
The Emotional Memorial Scene
Cole Brings Plenty, aged 27, was discovered deceased in a rural Kansas area in April 2024. He had gone missing during a domestic violence investigation in which he was identified as a suspect. The actor had guest-starred in two episodes of the 1923 series in 2023.
In Sunday’s episode of the CBS series Marshals, family members of Monica (Kelsey Asbille) convene at the Broken Rock reservation for a memorial service. Attendees include her widower Kayce (Luke Grimes), son Tate (Brecken Merrill), and grandfather (Rudy Ramos). Joining them are Marshal Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) and her team: Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos), and Pete ‘Cal’ Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green).
Arielle Kebbel’s Reflections
Arielle Kebbel described the filming of the ceremony as profoundly moving. “We filmed the ceremony and Mo Brings Plenty brought his family to it, and it was a way of honoring his nephew,” Kebbel stated. “I will remember that day for as long as I live. It was very emotional.”
She emphasized the blurred lines between art and life, calling the Brings Plenty family “such a beautiful community.” Kebbel plans to wear handmade jewelry from them as a tribute. “It brings me to tears to be part of this community and also to learn more about what happened to Cole and bring that awareness,” she added. “You can never plan for going into it, but it has deeply impacted me forever.”
Mo Brings Plenty’s Anguish
Mo Brings Plenty recently expressed heartbreak over the unresolved circumstances of his nephew’s death and the limited investigative resources. “Cole was my nephew, but he was like a son to me,” he said. He criticized the case being dismissed as “no foul play” without proper investigation, noting, “Because we’re taxpaying people as well.”
Brings Plenty hopes future storylines address such issues, as many families face similar uncertainties. “I saw his body, I saw the evidence that is there that someone caught him. So for them to say that there was nothing, I can’t believe that,” he stated.
He faulted local authorities for minimal efforts, claiming they “weren’t even really looking for him. They were hunting him.” Only after he and a friend rented a helicopter and informed the Lawrence Police Department did search efforts intensify.
Responses from Law Enforcement
The Lawrence Police Department indicated willingness to release a full investigative report with family approval. Officials presented evidence—including videos, witness statements, and photographs—to the family in person. “The family chose not to release the facts. Out of compassion, we complied with their wishes,” a spokesperson said.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a thorough investigation and shared findings with the family. Details remain sealed due to a court order obtained by the family.
Marshals airs Sundays at 8/7c on CBS.
