MPs and benefit recipients receive substantial increases this week to offset rising living costs. Chancellor Rachel Reeves recently rejected widespread aid for households facing an energy crisis linked to the conflict in Iran.

MPs’ Pay Rise and Adjustments

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority approved a 5% salary increase for MPs, raising base pay to £98,599. This includes a £3,300 cost-of-living adjustment for all members, from backbenchers to senior figures like Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Chancellor Reeves. Unelected House of Lords members see their daily tax-free attendance allowance rise to £390.

The authority cited growing job complexity and increased intimidation as reasons for the hike, projecting salaries to reach £110,000 by 2029. This exceeds the 3% inflation rate and surpasses the 3.3% raise offered to nurses.

Benefit Claimants’ Increases

Universal Credit, the largest benefit program, rises by 6.2%—nearly double inflation—for 6.5 million claimants. Funded partly by reductions in the health element, the change costs £1.9 billion annually. State pensions also increase by 4.8% under the triple lock mechanism.

End of Two-Child Benefit Cap

Next week, the government scraps the two-child benefit cap, costing £3.5 billion yearly. Previously, it limited means-tested payments like Universal Credit and child tax credits to the first two children, reducing support by about £3,455 per additional child. Official data indicates nearly 200,000 workless large families will gain thousands annually, with the largest potentially receiving over £10,000 extra.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson described the cap as ‘awful’ and stated on Sky News: ‘There are big cost of living pressures we know that families are facing. And that’s why we are taking action.’ She highlighted additional supports like energy bill relief, expanded breakfast clubs, childcare, and minimum wage hikes to aid families.

Pay Disparities and Criticisms

Recent figures show public sector average pay rose 5.9% in the three months to January, compared to 3.3% in the private sector, widening the gap.

William Yarwood of the TaxPayers’ Alliance warned of a ‘two-tier society’ where workers bear an unsustainable load. He stated: ‘Taxpayers are exhausted from having to repeatedly broaden their shoulders as ministers demand ever more from fewer and fewer people.’ Yarwood advocated freezing benefits and tying MPs’ pay to GDP per capita.

Restore Britain MP Rupert Lowe, who donates his salary to charities, noted his Great Yarmouth constituents as the ‘only taxpayers’ benefiting from the MP rise. He remarked: ‘I actually wouldn’t mind paying MPs more if they delivered the goods – sadly, we all know that is not the case. The system is entirely broken – designed to protect the cheats, the indolent and the fraudsters. That’s just the MPs. Cut tax, cut the size of the state, cut waste. Brutally.’ Conservatives criticized redirecting health element savings to other welfare boosts.
