Residents of Prince Edward Island are rallying to support the local humane society following the intake of 43 dogs seized from a home last week. The sudden influx has prompted an urgent call for donations to manage the animals’ care.

Community Steps Up with Essential Supplies

Ashley Travis, development and communications co-ordinator for the P.E.I. Humane Society, notes that locals have reached out eagerly, delivering a surge of cleaning supplies and food. Although the new shelter nears completion, space remains tight in the current facility.

The shelter’s Facebook page highlights priority items. “Right now, the No. 1 thing we need are newspapers,” Travis states. “We line all of our kennels with newspapers and, when there’s a large quantity of dogs, they make cleaning a lot faster for our team.”

Key Donations Requested

Paper towels prove invaluable, alongside dish soap and disinfectants like Mr. Clean or Pine-Sol. Travis emphasizes the value of large bottles of name-brand dish soap. “Those are really useful things that we’re in very significant need of right now,” she says, as staff use them for multiple shelter tasks.

Partnerships Bolster Food Supply

The humane society partners with Global Pet Foods, while Blue Ribbon Pet Supply hosts a fundraiser to secure enough food for the new arrivals. “We’re distributing food, we’re distributing medications, we’re distributing supplies,” Travis explains. “As quick as a package is coming in, we’re redistributing it.”

Overwhelming Support Since Seizure

Since the February 5 seizure, support has been “overwhelmingly positive,” Travis reports. “Anyone who’s ever been in need on Prince Edward Island will tell you that Islanders are some of the most generous people you will ever meet,” she adds. “We are seeing that live every single day that we come to work the last couple of days.”

Volunteers handle the extra workload, and foster families welcome dogs to free up space. No fines or charges have emerged yet, as the investigation continues. “Our phones are going crazy…. We’re all becoming masters of multitasking,” Travis says, praising the province-wide response from animal lovers.
