Popular children’s books featuring Peppa Pig and Hey Duggee face an urgent recall due to a serious choking risk. Parents and caregivers should immediately keep these items away from young children and return them for a full refund.
Safety Concerns Prompt Immediate Action
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued a product recall alert for specific Ladybird titles printed between 2020 and 2021. Officials warn that the glitter varnish on the book covers can lift and flake off, creating small detachable parts. These pose a choking hazard, especially to children under 36 months who often explore objects by mouthing them.
“The products present a risk of choking as the glitter varnish finish on the cover can lift and flake off, creating small parts,” OPSS officials stated. “These small parts pose a choking hazard to children, particularly those under 36 months of age who have a natural tendency to explore objects by placing them in their mouths.” The books fail to meet the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
Ladybird Books Limited, part of Penguin, has withdrawn the affected titles. The publisher advises: “If you have a copy from any of the printings listed please take the book away from small children and return it to the retailer you bought it from for a full refund (there is no need to produce a receipt). No other printings of the titles included in this product recall or any other titles are affected by this issue.”
