Manchester United have finalized the permanent transfer of defender Rhys Bennett to Fleetwood Town, allowing the 22-year-old academy graduate to continue his development in League Two.
Bennett’s Journey from United’s Youth Ranks
Bennett joined Manchester United at age 10 and progressed through the club’s youth system, captaining the under-18s to victory in the FA Youth Cup final against Nottingham Forest in 2022. Prior to his successful loan at Fleetwood last season, where he featured in 35 matches, Bennett gained experience on loan at Stockport County. Despite his promise, he never broke into the senior squad and faced stiff competition from established defenders at Old Trafford.
Excitement for Permanent Move
Upon sealing the deal, Bennett expressed enthusiasm for the next chapter in his career. “I’ve just turned 22 and I think now is the time to kick on and play as many games as I can,” he stated. “I’ve been out on loan, I’ve played a lot of football, and it’s about getting more experience and growing as a player and as a person.”
He highlighted Fleetwood’s appealing playing style and team environment as key factors in his decision. “The style of football really worked for me. We wanted to play, be comfortable on the ball, and the back five suited me,” Bennett added. “There are a lot of good players here and that helped me kick on. I’m absolutely buzzing to be back here. From the moment I came in last time it just felt like a family. I’m really excited to pick up where I left off and get back playing football.”
Fleetwood, who ended the previous campaign in 14th place under initial management of Charlie Adam, provided Bennett with consistent playing time that aided his growth.
United’s January Strategy and Other Movements
Manchester United’s activities in the January window remain limited, with the club prioritizing major acquisitions for the summer, particularly in midfield. The departure of Bennett aligns with a willingness to facilitate moves for young players seeking regular minutes. Similarly, forward Joe Hugill, also in his early 20s, has joined Scottish club Kilmarnock.
In contrast, striker Joshua Zirkzee is set to remain at the club despite dropping in the team hierarchy and interest from Italian sides. Head coach Michael Carrick indicated support for the Dutch forward, stating, “I am looking forward to working with him. That’s it, nothing else has been needed to be said.”
