Gardeners can enhance their outdoor spaces this April by repurposing cucumber peels instead of discarding them. These peels offer multiple benefits, from creating nutrient-rich fertilizer to repelling pests, helping plants thrive through summer.
How to Create Cucumber Peel Fertilizer
Peel a cucumber and place the skins in a tub. Fill the tub with water and secure the lid. Allow it to sit for 24 to 48 hours. The result is a potent, green fertilizer packed with nutrients for flowers, plants, and lawns.
Gardening enthusiast Ifzaal, from Nature with Ifzaal, explains: “A quick and easy gardening tip to help your garden plants grow and provide them with the nutrients that your flowers, plants and even your lawn might need! Dilute this down if you’ve left it in the tub for 48 hours, but after 24 hours it should be fine to use without diluting.”
He adds: “Next time you peel a cucumber, save the skin for your garden. You can also place the skin into your compost bin!”
Dilute the mixture at a 1:10 ratio (one part mixture to ten parts water) before applying to soil every three weeks to promote growth.
Key Benefits of Cucumber Peels
Cucumber skins contain potassium and phosphorus, essential for nourishing plants, especially in containers. Soaking them produces a dense fertilizer that boosts plant health.
Pest Repellent Properties
The bitter compounds, cucurbitacins, in the skins deter ants, slugs, moths, and silverfish. Place fresh peel strips around plant pots or garden edges to keep pests at bay.
Additional Uses
Dry the peels to create nutrient-rich ash, which can be sprinkled directly into soil. This simple hack reuses kitchen waste effectively, transforming gardens into vibrant spaces.
