School bus drivers employed by Alouette Bus Lines in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, prepare to vote on a potential strike this Monday morning. The decision by 80 members of USW Local 2020 could disrupt routes for approximately 2,000 students across North Bay, West Nipissing, Parry Sound, and surrounding areas.
Union Calls Offer Insufficient
The employer presented its final proposal to the bargaining committee late Friday, but wages remain well below the local minimum livable standard, according to Stephanie Gunson, president of USW Local 2020.
The proposed raise amounts to $2.69 per hour for drivers. Gunson noted that the union recommends rejecting the deal, emphasizing that drivers deserve better compensation.
Company Cancels Routes Amid Tensions
Alouette Bus Lines announced the cancellation of Monday morning bus services in a letter to the union and provincial government. The company expressed disappointment, stating that it views the union’s tactics as using school children as pawns in negotiations and vows not to leave children stranded at school.
Gunson countered that drivers received instructions to report for work before attending the ratification vote. She accused the employer of exploiting drivers’ commitment to student safety as a negotiation strategy.
“We recognize the impact of this labour dispute on families and communities, but these drivers must stand up for their worth,” Gunson added.
