A mother experienced sheer panic when she discovered and removed a small foreign object lodged in her toddler son’s throat moments after collecting him from nursery.
The Alarming Discovery
Shortly after picking up her young child, the mother noticed something unusual and pulled a thin, beige item resembling a plaster—about the size of her fingertip with a black cross—from the back of his mouth. Concerned about choking risks and her son’s health, she shared three photos of the object online, explaining, “Pulled this item out of the back of my son’s mouth/throat after picking him up from daycare. It’s very thin and doesn’t have a sticky side from what we can tell.”
Online Insights and Identification
Hundreds of responses flooded in, with many users identifying the object as the seal or tab from a baby wipes packet. One commenter noted, “It looks a little like the seal to wipes, the seal that comes from the manufacturer to keep all the moisture in.” Another confirmed, “That is the part of a wipe package that you have to rip off to access baby wipes. It’s located underneath the lid of the pack of wipes.”
Nursery’s Response and Policy Changes
The mother met with nursery staff, who confirmed the item was indeed the tab from a wipes packet. They accepted full responsibility, stating their current practice involves removing the tab immediately upon opening and discarding it. Staff believe the toddler accessed it from the trash area.
The nursery now implements stricter measures: all wipes packets open outside the classroom, undergo inspection, and have tabs removed before entry. “It should be 100% baby proof before it ever enters the classroom,” the mother quoted the updated policy. She added that the meeting proved productive, with profuse apologies and plans for further changes to be reviewed on Friday. She noted no prior complaints about the facility.
A Similar Choking Incident
A paramedic shared a comparable case, recounting, “Last year I got called for a toddler choking… Halfway to the hospital she gags, stares at me and opens her mouth, revealing something. Turns out it was this exact piece of plastic from a wipes container that had folded over and had been hiding somewhere stuck to the inside of her mouth.”
The mother summarized the ordeal: “Ultimately this was a scary experience but we all walked away from it and will do better for our kiddos.”
