Wayne Lineker, the Ibiza nightlife icon and brother of football star Gary Lineker, recently shared a deeply emotional moment triggered by his son’s candid concerns over his hard-partying ways.
A Shocking Family Intervention
Lineker, owner of popular venues like Ocean Beach and Linekers Bars, boasts a staggering tally of 52,000 drinks consumed over 13 years. Yet, the toll on his family hit hardest. Now seven months sober, he describes his eldest son, Duane—a business partner and the more responsible figure in their dynamic—as the one who keeps him in check.
One day at the office, Duane delivered a heartbreaking message. Lineker recalls: “Dad, we love you and we care about you, but we have to stop you picking the girls up from school.” The words struck like a ton of bricks. Lineker had routinely fetched his two granddaughters in his Bentley each week, but Duane deemed it unsafe.
Lineker understood immediately. Even if sober by afternoon pickup time, remnants of alcohol or drugs from the previous night lingered in his system. He praises Duane’s decision: “It must have been very difficult for him to have that conversation, but I got it straight away. He made the right decision.”
Youngest Son’s Emotional Plea
Lineker also recounts a poignant encounter with his youngest son, Freddie, a DJ. Freddie stayed at his father’s villa before an early flight to Zante. At 5 a.m., hearing movement, Freddie entered the room for a cuddle. Tears flowed as he pleaded, not wanting his father to “go.” The incident underscored the health risks of Lineker’s heavy drinking and its visible strain on his family.
Embracing Sobriety
Lineker discussed his sobriety journey on Good Morning Britain with hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls. After 40 years in the industry and daily drinking, he declared: “Enough was enough.” The cumulative effects finally prompted lasting change.
