A woman traveled 16 hours to attend a colleague’s wedding in Scotland, only to face an embarrassing rejection at the reception venue.
The Long Journey and Sudden Rejection
Excited for her first wedding experience, the guest arrived after significant effort and expense. She enjoyed the ceremony alongside another coworker, describing it as “so lovely.” Planning to take photos with the bride and join the wedding breakfast, she checked the table plan upon entering the reception area.
To her shock, her name was nowhere to be found. The Master of Ceremonies approached, requested their invites, and informed them they were only welcome for the church service and evening drinks. Fine print on the invitation had specified no meal inclusion, which neither guest had noticed.
“I was absolutely mortified,” the woman shared. She and her companion quietly left the venue.
Behind the Invitation
The bride later admitted inviting office colleagues out of politeness, following their boss’s suggestion. “We had thought we were friends with her,” the guest added.
Dressed formally, the pair found a nearby restaurant in the Scottish Highlands to pass five hours while others dined. They grabbed bacon rolls and tea at a local greasy spoon, then returned to their bed and breakfast. The B&B owner, outraged by their story, fed them and drove them back for the evening event at 7 p.m.
By then, other guests were heavily intoxicated after hours of drinking. The two women were the only evening arrivals, feeling out of place amid “very handsy” inebriated attendees. They departed at 10 p.m., securing a ride to a local bar where friendly locals, tipped off by the B&B owner, cheered them up.
A Silver Lining and Revenge
The next morning brought a lavish breakfast, with locals assuring them such treatment was not the norm. “We had ended up having a fun night because of the locals. They really did save the day,” the guest reflected.
She now closely examines invites: “If I’m only invited to the evening part, that’s cool, but at least I’m informed.” For payback, they withdrew £50 cash each from the gift envelope—originally paired with a £100 bedding set—and gave only the bedding.
Public Backlash
The story drew widespread criticism online. One commenter stated: “It is just rude to invite a person to the morning and the evening part but not the eating part. Either you invite them to all or only evening.”
Another shared: “My cousin did that. We still talk about how inconsiderate it was years later.” A third noted: “I honestly have never heard of anyone doing that in this country! It’s either all day or evening only.”
