Identical twins Martine and Louise Fokkens, recognized as the world’s oldest sex workers, have candidly shared their experiences in Amsterdam’s sex industry, spanning nearly five decades until their retirement at age 70.
Entry into the Red Light District
Growing up in a modest household in Amsterdam, the twins were familiar with the city’s renowned Red Light District from a young age. It formed a normal part of their surroundings rather than a hidden underworld. Louise entered the profession at 17, introduced by her husband who encouraged her to try it. Soon after, she stood in one of the district’s display windows, advertising her services. Although she kept it secret initially, her family discovered the truth and urged her twin, Martine, to intervene.
Louise reflected on the situation, stating, “As if you can tell your twin what to do; we never listened to anyone.” Despite the family’s concerns, she persisted.
Martine joined a few years later. Already married with children and working as a cleaner in a brothel, she faced frequent offers from clients but initially declined. Financial strain intensified when her husband’s job ended during a builders’ strike, leaving the family desperate for income. With Louise already established in the industry, Martine found the transition less daunting. She explained, “Without her, I would never have done it. But with her, it felt less frightening.” Guidance from fellow workers quickly positioned her in a window as well.
Career Milestones and Unique Traditions
Over the years, the twins built successful careers, collectively serving an estimated 355,000 clients. They owned a brothel and even operated a traditional Dutch restaurant. Famous for their thigh-high leather boots, they charged extra for clients who requested their removal.
Their notoriety grew, earning them the title of the oldest window workers in the Netherlands. Retirement came at 70 due to Louise’s arthritis, which made certain positions too painful, and a noticeable decline in business for Martine.
Memorable Client Encounters
The twins recounted several unusual experiences. One standout involved a client who fantasized about a ‘filthy little gnome’ scenario. He reportedly trembled with excitement at the mere sight of his imagined ‘dirty little gnome’ wife.
In another incident, a client attempted to flee without paying but abandoned his prosthetic leg. The twins stored it in a cupboard until he returned to settle the bill.
Even after retirement, Martine maintains a connection with one long-time client addicted to weekly S&M sessions. She described the routine, saying, “He’s been coming to me for so long; it’s like going to church on a Sunday.” She chose not to end the arrangement, viewing it as a steadfast commitment.
