Edmonton authorities have arrested three suspects linked to a series of break-ins that resulted in more than $750,000 worth of stolen property, utilizing stolen “jaws of life” rescue tools.

Theft of Rescue Tools

In November and December, firefighters in Water Valley and Calahoo reported the theft of jaws of life tools from their stations. These high-value items, worth around $110,000, were later used in multiple commercial burglaries across the region.

Wave of Break-Ins

Between December 1 and January 8, police documented 18 break-and-enter incidents at Edmonton businesses, with 14 involving the pilfered rescue tools. The crimes concentrated in southwest Edmonton (10 cases), southeast Edmonton (five cases), northeast Edmonton (two cases), and one in Sherwood Park.

Targeted stores sold diverse merchandise, and investigators confirmed no connections among the business owners. Stolen goods included luxury handbags and jackets, cannabis and vaping products, as well as cash extracted from ATMs and safes, totaling between $750,000 and $1 million in losses.

Arrests and Charges

Late last January, officers apprehended two men aged 30 and 42 in connection with the crimes. A 47-year-old man was taken into custody earlier this month. The trio now faces more than 200 charges combined, including 35 counts of break-and-enter with intent to commit theft, 35 counts of disguise with intent, and 42 counts of possessing stolen property valued over $5,000.

Police Statement

“This investigation highlights the harm that one small group of offenders can cause to communities,” stated Staff Sgt. Darcy McGunigal of Morinville RCMP. “Strong partnerships between policing agencies are essential to combating prolific offenders. We thank the officers of the Edmonton Police Service for their continued dedication.”

Court appearances for the accused remain unscheduled.
