The Wonthaggi Workers Club was transformed into a vibrant floral spectacle for the 36th Annual Orchid Show, hosted by the South Gippsland Orchid Society. Despite a challenging, wet winter that hindered early flowering for many popular varieties, the event showcased an impressive array of 280 entries from 80 dedicated growers, drawing enthusiasts from across the region and beyond.
Orchid Show Thrives Amidst Unfavorable Growing Conditions
Society President Allen Archibald expressed pride in the event, noting it as the largest orchid show in South Gippsland, supported by the society’s substantial membership. The impressive turnout and quality of blooms were particularly noteworthy given the adverse weather conditions experienced in the lead-up to the show. “We had a very wet winter and a lack of sun,” Archibald explained. “Because of that, popular varieties like Cymbidiums and Dendrobiums haven’t flowered as early as they usually do.” Nevertheless, the venue was filled with a dazzling display of colours and intricate forms, attracting visitors and participants from diverse locations.
Expanding Reach and Community Spirit
The South Gippsland Orchid Society has seen significant growth, with new members joining from East Gippsland. This expansion was partly inspired by Raymond Gribble, a first-time entrant who garnered considerable attention the previous year by winning the Champion Orchid of the Show with his Dendrobium Ray’s Quest. Archibald attributed the show’s enduring success to the society’s welcoming and collaborative atmosphere. “Experienced members provide lots of helpful advice,” he remarked. “It’s that collaborative spirit that truly makes the show happen.” This inclusive ethos ensures that both seasoned horticulturists and newcomers can learn and share their passion.
Highlighting Rare and Award-Winning Specimens
Among the standout displays was a rare Masdevallia, brought from Newlands Arm by grower Garry Neilson. Neilson recently achieved a significant milestone in the Australian orchid-growing community, receiving two prestigious awards from the Orchid Societies Council of Victoria for his success in cultivating the uncommon South American species, Masdevallia schlimii. He was awarded a Highly Commended Certificate for quality and a coveted Certificate of Botanical Merit. This species, native to the high-elevation cloud forests of Colombia and Venezuela, is notoriously difficult to cultivate and flower locally.
A Personal Journey of Passion and Remembrance
For Neilson, these accolades represent a deeply personal journey. He began orchid growing four years ago after his wife passed away, initially taking over her greenhouse to care for her plants. What started as a way to honor her memory has evolved into a profound passion, culminating in this provincial recognition. Neilson has cultivated an impressive collection of approximately 2,000 orchids, specializing in rare and challenging species. His simple philosophy for success includes patience, diligent plant care, daily interaction with the plants, and recreating their natural environmental needs.
Showcase of Genera and Hybrid Winners
The show featured numerous prize-winning entries across various categories. Trish Jones secured the Best Advanced Any Other Genera Hybrid award for her Lycaste × Imschootiana, a natural hybrid created by crossing Lycaste cruenta and Lycaste virginalis. Ben Kreutzer was awarded Best Advanced Cymbidium for his Cymbidium goeringii, also known as the noble orchid or chun lan. Lita Gill, an experienced grower with over two decades of experience, won the Australasian Hybrid or Species in Show for her Dendrobium speciosum intervarietal x Moonmere.
Community Engagement and Vendor Support
Show Marshall Julie Kilgour commended the members for their enthusiastic participation and assistance during the two-day event, also acknowledging the support of the Wonthaggi Workers Club. The early-morning plant sales proved exceptionally popular, with eager buyers lining up from dawn to secure sought-after varieties. In addition to the extensive orchid selection, specialized vendors offered essential supplies for orchid enthusiasts. The event provided an invaluable opportunity for both experienced horticulturists seeking rare specimens and novices looking for inspiration and expert guidance, reinforcing its reputation as a highlight of natural beauty and community spirit.
