Free agent offensive guard Robert Jones secures a return to the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers following a severe neck injury that sidelined him for the entire 2025 season.
Injury Derails Promising Season
Jones suffered a fractured bone in his neck during a Dallas Cowboys training camp practice in July 2025, just before the season kicked off. The 27-year-old had inked a one-year, $3.75 million contract with Dallas the previous offseason and competed for a starting role. Instead, the injury landed him on injured reserve on August 8, 2025, preventing any game action.
49ers Provide Career Revival
The 49ers hosted Jones for a workout on Monday and quickly finalized a contract, betting on his recovery to bolster their offensive line depth amid a Super Bowl push. Deal terms remain undisclosed, but the move signals confidence in his ability to contribute.
Jones’ NFL Journey
An undrafted free agent out of Miami in 2021, Jones appeared in 30 starts across four seasons, earning a full-time starting spot in 2024. After his stint with the Cowboys, he enters this opportunity with proven experience.
Addressing 49ers’ Line Needs
San Francisco seeks stability at left guard after rotating players last season. Ben Bartch opened as starter but saw limited action due to injuries and now hits free agency. Spencer Burford started nine games before joining the Las Vegas Raiders. Seventh-round pick Connor Colby returns, joined by new free agent signee Brett Toth for competition.
