An 82-year-old man caught with over 75,000 child abuse images avoids prison due to his advanced age, despite admitting he enjoyed viewing the material. Louis Rumis possessed thousands of the most severe Category A images, including videos of infants as young as six months being abused.
Police Raids Uncover Massive Collection
Officers raided Rumis’s home in the affluent village of Everton near Lymington in April 2024. The property search revealed dozens of SD cards, hard drives, and storage devices filled with child sex abuse material. The volume was so vast that police stopped counting after confirming more than 75,000 images.
Rumis admitted three counts of possession: 4,091 Category A images (including 232 videos), 10,445 Category B images, and 60,787 Category C images. During his arrest, he boasted to officers that he enjoyed the images and had not paid for them, referring to them as ‘child porn.’
Even after the initial raid and release on bail, Rumis continued downloading. A follow-up search on May 19, 2025, uncovered additional images across all categories. In a subsequent interview, he confessed to ongoing viewing and enjoyment.
Court Sentencing and Judicial Remarks
At Southampton Crown Court, Judge Nigel Peters KC imposed an 18-month suspended sentence. He warned Rumis of no mercy for future offenses, stating: ‘Only two factors are keeping you out of prison – your plea of guilty and your age. Had you been somewhat younger, I would have found it very difficult not to send you to prison.’
The judge highlighted the ‘huge volume’ of material on Rumis’s laptops and phones, noting: ‘You were up to no good even after you had been released on bail.’ He added: ‘If it wasn’t for people like him, children wouldn’t be abused. They are taken off the streets and given loads of sweets and pocket money to perform terrible acts.’
Prosecutor Oliver Hirsch detailed the raids in the New Forest National Park village, where average home values exceed £500,000.
Defense counsel Ed Wylde argued for leniency, saying: ‘He’s ashamed of where he finds himself. He is truly sorry. There’s a real prospect of rehabilitation.’ Rumis, with no prior convictions, also received a sexual harm prevention order, 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days, and a £150 victim surcharge.
