Piers Morgan has opened up about the evolution of his relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump, from a strong alliance to a public disagreement and eventual mending. In a candid discussion on Jordan Peterson’s podcast, Morgan reflected on their longstanding connection, which originated years before Trump’s presidency during their time together on the U.S. version of The Apprentice.
Early Support During Tough Times
Following Morgan’s exit from CNN in 2015, Trump stood out as one of the few individuals who offered genuine support. Among just three or four people in America who reached out, Trump made regular contact. “He contacted me every month for a few months, saying, ‘How are you doing? Are you okay? Can I help?'” Morgan recalled. He emphasized that while others might have had similar incentives, Trump was among the rare few who actually followed through.
Fulfilling a Key Promise
When Trump won the presidency in 2016, Morgan called to congratulate him and made a single request in return. “I said, I just want your first international television interview,” Morgan remembered. Trump responded promptly with “Done.” True to his word, Trump granted a 45-minute interview to Morgan at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “It was spectacularly good for my career, and he kept his word,” Morgan noted, praising Trump’s commitment.
The Value of Loyalty and Emerging Tensions
Morgan highlighted Trump’s deep appreciation for loyalty, stating that if someone supported him, Trump reciprocated strongly. “If you were loyal to him, he was very, very, very loyal back,” he explained, pointing out this trait as often underappreciated by observers. However, their bond faced challenges when Morgan directly challenged Trump on claims of a stolen 2020 election. “I’ve told him to his face,” Morgan said. “And he doesn’t want to hear it.”
Signs of Reconciliation
Despite the friction, recent interactions suggest the two have patched things up. During an appearance on Good Morning Britain last year, Morgan shared details of a conversation with Trump on the morning of a planned meeting between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The session, which occurred just hours before a potential U.S.-Ukraine agreement, was suddenly canceled after a heated White House exchange involving both leaders and U.S. Vice President JD Vance. While riding in a black cab in London, Morgan received a call from Trump, whom he has saved in his phone as ‘DJT.’ He described answering with a lighthearted smile.
