Bettina ‘Tina’ Dalton, one of the original presenters of the Australian travel show Getaway, has died. Dalton passed away on the Sunshine Coast on Monday, May 13, 2024, after a brief illness. She was 70 years old. Her death marks the end of an era for the beloved program, which she helped launch in 1992.

A Pioneer of Travel Television

Dalton was a familiar face to Australian audiences when Getaway first aired on May 14, 1992. Her engaging presence and genuine enthusiasm for exploring new destinations quickly made her a fan favorite. She was more than just a presenter; she was a pioneer who brought the world into Australian living rooms, inspiring countless viewers to embark on their own adventures.

Her career in television spanned over three decades, and she was nominated for an Emmy Award for her work. Before her passing, Dalton had recently returned to the program that launched her career. In 2023, exactly 31 years after her debut episode, she reunited with Getaway for a special segment. This journey took viewers to the breathtaking landscapes of Antarctica aboard the Scenic Eclipse, showcasing the pristine beauty of the polar region.

Dalton reflected on her return to the show, stating, “When I got the call to present another episode of Getaway I knew I had to take the chance. The show has always felt like home to me, and makes me reminisce on the early days of my career.” This sentiment underscored her deep connection to the program and its enduring impact on her professional life.

From Presenter to Award-Winning Filmmaker

Beyond her work on Getaway, Tina Dalton forged a distinguished career as an award-winning natural history filmmaker and producer. Her transition from on-screen personality to behind-the-scenes storyteller highlighted her versatility and deep passion for the natural world.

Working with WildBear Entertainment, Dalton contributed significantly to wildlife documentary production. Michael Tear, CEO of WildBear Entertainment, paid tribute to her extensive contributions, emphasizing her profound impact on our understanding of the planet. “Our collective knowledge base about the planet is so much richer because of her work,” Tear stated. He further described Dalton as “clever, creative, visionary, and great fun,” noting that she “shone an important light” on the natural world.

Dalton’s passion extended beyond filmmaking; she was deeply committed to social and environmental issues. Her work often aimed to raise awareness and foster a greater appreciation for conservation efforts. This dedication was a hallmark of her professional life and a significant part of her legacy.

A Life of Passion and Connection

Tina Dalton shared her life with Sydney businessman, art collector, and philanthropist John Schaeffer, until his passing in 2020. Her personal life was also marked by strong family bonds. She is survived by her daughters, Pnina and Chana, as well as her mother, sister, and brother.

Colleagues remember Dalton not only for her professional achievements but also for her vibrant personality. She was described as a colleague and friend who was “great fun” and will be “sorely missed” by the team at WildBear Entertainment and the wider industry. Tear concluded his tribute by extending his condolences: “My thoughts are now with her daughters and wider family.”

Legacy of Exploration and Advocacy

Tina Dalton’s career was a testament to her adventurous spirit and her dedication to storytelling. As an original Getaway presenter, she ignited a passion for travel in many. As a filmmaker, she deepened our understanding and appreciation of the natural world, advocating for its preservation through her compelling documentaries.

Her contributions to television and filmmaking have left an indelible mark. The Emmy nomination and her work at the Sundance Film Festival are testaments to the quality and impact of her productions. Dalton’s ability to connect with audiences, whether on screen or through her documentaries, solidified her place as a significant figure in Australian media. Her legacy is one of curiosity, creativity, and a profound commitment to sharing the wonders of our planet.

The travel and documentary communities mourn the loss of a true visionary. Tina Dalton’s work will continue to inspire future generations of travelers and filmmakers, ensuring her passion for exploration and her advocacy for the environment live on.
