Horror-Inspired Attire in Deadly House Fire Case

A murder trial has heard disturbing details about a defendant’s clothing choice during an alleged random arson attack that claimed an elderly man’s life. Andrew Gorrell, 54, reportedly wore a Chicago Bulls jacket and a Nightmare on Elm Street T-shirt when prosecutors claim he ignited a deadly fire at a Wednesbury residence in May 2025.

The Fatal Incident

Court proceedings revealed Gorrell allegedly set a wheelie bin ablaze and pushed it against the front door of a Holyhead Road property in the early hours of May 11. The fire trapped 82-year-old John Edwards inside, leading to catastrophic burns that proved fatal two weeks later. Edwards’ wife Doreen, 81, and their two adult sons sustained injuries but survived the blaze.

Prosecutors emphasized the defendant’s apparent lack of connection to the victims or the West Midlands town, describing it as a random attack. The Nightmare on Elm Street shirt – referencing a horror film where a character dies by fire – became a focal point during opening statements.

Charges and Pleas

Gorrell has pleaded not guilty to murder, two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and arson with intent to endanger life. However, he admitted to the lesser charges of manslaughter and reckless arson. The court also heard guilty pleas for three additional arson incidents involving rubbish bins in Wednesbury town center hours after the fatal fire.

“Following his arrest, the defendant denied involvement for an extended period,” the prosecutor stated. “Only recently did he admit to manslaughter and reckless arson regarding the Edwards family fire.”

CCTV Footage Tracks Defendant’s Movements

Surveillance evidence presented to Wolverhampton Crown Court allegedly shows Gorrell’s movements throughout the night:

Timeline of Events

Footage reportedly placed the defendant at a Wolverhampton tram stop at 12:40 AM before arriving in Wednesbury by 12:58 AM. Between 1:15-1:20 AM, cameras captured him on Holyhead Road carrying a distinctive Marks and Spencer shopping bag.

Prosecutors described multiple sightings near the Edwards property, including instances where the defendant allegedly wandered into driveways of nearby buildings. At approximately 2:45 AM, surveillance showed a light near Gorrell’s face consistent with cigarette lighting.

The Alleged Arson

“He positioned the wheelie bin directly against the front door and ignited its contents,” the prosecutor explained. “As he walked away along Holyhead Road, the fire gradually intensified.” Emergency services responded around 3:06 AM after a neighbor alerted authorities.

Post-Fire Activity and Arrest

After leaving the scene, Gorrell reportedly visited a Bilston Road petrol station where he complained of being “stranded” before disappearing from CCTV coverage for several hours. Authorities later identified him through clothing descriptions when Cheshire and North Wales Police coordinated the arrest.

Investigators recovered both the Chicago Bulls jacket and Nightmare on Elm Street shirt seen in surveillance footage. During police interviews, Gorrell reportedly exercised his right to remain silent.

Prosecution’s Murder Case

Legal representatives outlined their position: “While we don’t necessarily claim intent to kill, his actions demonstrate intention to cause serious harm. Moving the bin, failing to alert emergency services – these factors meet the legal threshold for murder when resulting in death.”

The prosecutor emphasized that spontaneous actions can constitute murder under UK law: “Premeditation isn’t required – spur-of-the-moment decisions causing fatal injury carry equal weight.”

The trial continues with further examination of evidence expected in coming days.
