Central and southern Saskatchewan experiences a slight warmup Saturday afternoon following hazardous wind chills overnight. A yellow weather alert for extreme cold in the region lifted just before noon Saturday.
Northern Areas Still Under Alert
Cold weather alerts persist Saturday afternoon in northern Saskatchewan, including Uranium City and Stony Rapids.
Overnight Lows Across the Province
Wind chills plunged to as low as –42 overnight in central and southern areas such as Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina, and Estevan. Key Lake, located 575 kilometres north of Saskatoon, recorded the province’s lowest temperature at around –34 C, earning its reputation as Saskatchewan’s ‘cold pole.’
Weekend Outlook
Temperatures remain chilly through the weekend into Monday morning but moderate Saturday afternoon for most regions, according to Keane Kokolsky, an operational meteorologist. “It definitely looks like the worst is over, but it still looks like it will likely be cold again,” Kokolsky stated.
Saturday evening may bring cold wind chills, though not as severe as the previous night. An Arctic high-pressure system stretches over the southern Prairies from the Northwest Territories to the United States.
Short-Lived Relief Ahead
Warmer air arrives next week, but not springlike conditions. Southern spots near Assiniboia and Rockglen see higher temperatures Monday, yet a trailing cold front limits the thaw. “There’s a cold front that comes right behind it,” Kokolsky noted.
Some areas may briefly warm again by Thursday, though this reprieve proves short-lived.
