Emma Raducanu boasts a remarkable tennis career. The British star debuted at Wimbledon as a wildcard outside the top 300 while finishing her A-Levels, reaching the second week in 2021. Weeks later, she scripted history by becoming the only qualifier to claim a Grand Slam title at the US Open, aged just 18 and ranked No. 150.

Highs, Lows, and Recent Resurgence

Since that triumph, the 23-year-old has navigated injuries and form dips. She now sits at No. 24 globally after reaching the Cluj final. Nearly five years after her WTA Tour debut in Nottingham in June 2021, Raducanu acknowledges ongoing pressure, especially as Britain’s top player at Indian Wells.

Two Key Changes Boost Spotlight

Raducanu recently joined Uniqlo as their sole female tennis ambassador, unveiling her new kit in the Californian desert on Friday. She also reunited with Mark Petchey for informal coaching support, following a similar arrangement last year. Currently coachless after parting with Francisco Roig in January, she prefers targeted stints over rushed hires, prioritizing what suits her best.

Strategies to Manage Pressure

Raducanu combats pressure through consistent routines. “Pressure is always there and for me, the key is controlling what I can,” she stated after her Uniqlo partnership. “Before matches, I focus on routines: warming up the same way, listening to familiar music, tying my laces the same way. These small rituals create a sense of normality, even on the biggest stages. Mentally, I try to narrow my focus to the next point, not the outcome. When stress builds, I come back to my breathing and remind myself why I play – to compete, to learn, to myself. Accepting nerves rather than fighting them has helped me a lot.”

Strong Indian Wells Start, Tough Test Ahead

Raducanu showed no nerves in her opener, dominating qualifier Anastasia Zakharova 6-1 6-3 in one hour and 22 minutes on Friday. Next, she faces No. 6 seed and two-time Grand Slam finalist Amanda Anisimova on Sunday. Raducanu leads their head-to-head 2-1, though Anisimova won their latest encounter convincingly at last summer’s Canadian Open.

Anisimova reflected: “I think the last time I faced her I was just playing really well. I played the way I wanted to play. At the end of the day, there is a certain way I like to play. I think I also had found my rhythm. It might have been the second or third match I played last year. It was a great match. She’s not an easy opponent to face. She always brings high-quality tennis. Yeah, I have had some great matches with her. Hoping for another good one.”
