Rain taps softly against the windows as a log crackles in the wood-fired heater. Dusk descends outside, silencing the afternoon birdsong. Glasses of sparkling wine from Winchelsea clink together before a cozy evening unfolds on the L-shaped sofa, wrapped in a knitted blanket, with Oasis tunes filling the air.

Earlier that day, arrival at Looking Glass Lodge in Fairlight brings guests to this elevated cabin in Mallydams Wood Nature Reserve. Perched on stilts amid ferns beside a towering redwood, the glass-fronted treehouse seamlessly integrates with its forest surroundings. Floor-to-ceiling windows immerse visitors in nature around the clock, while a freestanding bath overlooks the treetops and panes tint dark at night for ultimate relaxation.

Local Delights in Rye and Winchelsea

Just over an hour by train from London, East Sussex draws weekend crowds to Rye, Hastings, and St. Leonards-on-Sea. Yet quieter coastal paths offer a slower pace. From Rye station, fresh scallops, lobster from the fish market, crisp vegetables from Sweet Williams, cheese, olives from the deli, and berries from Tibbs Farm fill shopping bags, boosting local businesses and the regional economy.

Sussex wineries thrive amid warmer, drier weather. Tillingham’s hilltop tours cost £40 per person year-round, featuring Friday candlelit evenings and winter warmers in the bar. Nearby, Charles Palmer Vineyard explores soil impacts on flavors starting at £23, complete with tastings and optional cheese pairings.

Ancient Traces at Pett-Level Beach

A short 10-minute walk leads to the Coastguard café in Hastings Country Park, with Channel views and strong coffee. Nearby Pett-Level Beach reveals waterlogged tree stumps from an ancient coastal woodland reshaped by rising seas over millennia. Craggy rocks hold fossilized dinosaur footprints—over 85 imprints from seven species, scientists from the University of Cambridge confirm, including discoveries just eight years ago.

Wildlife Haven at Rye Harbour

East toward Rye Harbour, intricate waterways form a vital wetland hosting over 4,000 flora and fauna species. The Discovery Centre on the River Rother introduces key residents. Spot curlew sandpipers with their short bills probing sands for worms and crabs, swifts darting southward, kestrels hovering, and marsh harriers soaring—vibrant life close to London.

The loop returns via the Two Sawyers pub for cod loin, chips, and Harvey’s ale by mid-afternoon.

Coastal Hike to Hastings Old Town

The final day features a three-mile (2.5-hour) hike west to Hastings Old Town. Gravel paths wind through dense, waist-high vegetation, wildflower meadows, poppy fields, and sweeping Channel vistas easing the steep climbs.

Descending via East Hill trades serenity for Old Town buzz. Family-run Rock-a-Nore Kitchen caps the adventure with a £19.95 shellfish platter of crab, oysters, and whelks, championing Hastings Stade and Rye’s small-boat fishers.

Travel Essentials

Southeastern Railway connects London St. Pancras to Rye in over an hour; Hastings adds 24 minutes via Winchelsea. Services also run from Charing Cross and Victoria to Hastings, slightly longer. Taxis wait at Rye and Hastings stations. Coastal paths, clearly marked, suit foot exploration. Looking Glass Lodge starts at £295 per night, with off-peak discounts.
