Strong winds sweeping across British Columbia have left thousands of residents without electricity, prompting widespread high wind warnings.

Power Outages on Vancouver Island

As of 4 p.m. PT on Tuesday, around 26,000 B.C. Hydro customers on Vancouver Island experienced outages. Officials report wind gusts reaching up to 100 km/h in some spots, fueling the disruptions.

Wind Warnings Across Interior Regions

High wind alerts extend to much of the southern and central Interior, covering areas like South Thompson, Nicola, 100 Mile House, Chilcotin, and the Coquihalla Highway.

Winter Storm Threats in the North

Yellow warnings for winter storms affect north-central B.C., including Prince George and the Peace region. Forecasters predict up to 25 centimetres of snow by Wednesday morning, with near-zero visibility from blowing snow and intense gusts.

Environment Canada urges caution: “Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Consider postponing non-essential travel and outdoor activities until conditions improve.”

Additional Alerts for Valleys and Passes

Special weather statements highlight high winds in the eastern Fraser Valley and mountain passes such as Highway 3 and the Okanagan Connector. Southwesterly gusts could hit 80 km/h but should subside by midnight Wednesday.

Coastal wind warnings may lift late Tuesday afternoon, yet risks persist. Possible local utility outages, service disruptions, and travel issues loom. Authorities advise avoiding fallen power lines.
