Teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli secured his second consecutive victory at the Japanese Grand Prix, surging ahead in the drivers’ championship after Mercedes teammate George Russell encountered misfortune during the race at Suzuka.
Race Highlights Under 2026 Regulations
The event unfolded with an action-packed start under the new 2026 rules. Russell battled back to the front, positioning himself just behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri following his pit stop on Lap 21. With fresher tires, the British driver appeared poised to challenge for the lead.
However, a safety car deployed on Lap 22 following a high-impact 50G crash involving Britain’s Ollie Bearman disrupted Russell’s momentum and handed Antonelli a crucial free pit stop.
“Unbelievable,” Russell vented over the team radio in frustration. “Wow, our luck in these last two races.”
Antonelli’s Comeback and Podium Finishers
Antonelli had slipped from pole to sixth after wheelspin at the start but capitalized on the safety car to emerge in the lead upon its withdrawal. The Italian held firm to claim victory, with Piastri finishing second.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc overtook Russell at the restart, securing the final podium position and compounding the Mercedes driver’s woes.
Championship Implications and Schedule
Antonelli, now the youngest leader in Formula 1 history, builds on his maiden win in Shanghai two weeks prior. A substantial break precedes the next race in Miami at the start of May, after cancellations in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia due to Middle East tensions.
Former champion Jenson Button noted, “Going into this race, George was the one to beat. But now he has a true challenger.”
