Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire demonstrates zero tolerance for off-field behavior by dropping winger Josiah Karapani before Saturday’s Queensland derby against the Gold Coast Titans.
The Late-Night Incident
Karapani, 24, received a $1001 fine for public nuisance following a heated verbal argument with patrons outside a Fortitude Valley pub around 3:30am last Saturday. The clash occurred shortly after his team’s 26-12 victory over the Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium on March 27. Karapani faced no criminal charges, yet Maguire chose to bench him for the upcoming match.
Maguire’s Firm Response
This decision aligns with Maguire’s strict standards amid recent team disciplinary issues. Teammate Gehamat Shibasaki, a Queensland Origin and Kangaroos centre, served a one-game suspension after a drinking session before the NRL finals. Five-eighth Ezra Mam also faced a nine-game ban and $120,000 in fines from the Broncos and NRL for a drug-driving incident that tarnished the game’s reputation.
Maguire emphasized the team’s cultural shift, stating, “We are creating a culture here that we believe will take us to the success of what keeps the Broncos at the highest level.” He added, “I really believe in Josiah. I’ve seen him develop over the past 12 months. He has been able to show that he can play at the highest level… but you have to make sure that everything around you is in the right place to do that, week in, week out.”
Broncos Regain Momentum
After a shaky season start, including a surprising home loss to Parramatta, the Broncos hit form. They snapped a 10-year drought with a win over the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park in round three on March 20, then dominated the Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium.
Queensland Derby Showdown
Saturday’s clash pits the Broncos against Josh Hannay’s Titans, who arrive buoyed by a home win over the Dragons. The matchup features a family rivalry between Haas brothers Klese (Titans) and Payne (Broncos). TAB odds list Brisbane at $7.50 to claim the NRL premiership, trailing early leaders Penrith at $3.
