Ollie Watkins seeks guidance from former England striker Michael Owen as he battles through his most challenging season yet, determined to reclaim his spot in the national squad for the World Cup.
Recent Form Boost
The Aston Villa forward shows signs of resurgence with three goals in his last two outings. He heads into Sunday’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest in high spirits after productive discussions with Owen.
“I speak to Michael Owen quite a bit,” Watkins shares. “Someone like him, who has hit levels I’ve not achieved, understands my mindset and offers valuable advice. It’s great to connect with these experts. I messaged him on Instagram, and we chatted. He believes I’m at my peak when I play ‘angry’ and act as a constant nuisance. He urges me to embrace that style fully.”
Owen’s Insights and Watkins’ Response
Despite netting 13 goals this season, Watkins admits he has not felt at his sharpest. Aston Villa manager Unai Emery remains a steadfast supporter of the 30-year-old.
Watkins backed that trust with a brace in Thursday’s 3-1 victory over Bologna, positioning Villa on the verge of the Europa League semi-finals before the return leg at Villa Park next week.
Toughest Campaign Yet
“This season ranks as the toughest in my career,” Watkins reflects. “I’ve worked hard to reach this point and elevated my game by scoring in Europe, setting high standards. My goal for England in the Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands drew even more attention.”
“I’m not performing at the level I desire, and adjusting to that proves difficult. Yet football shifts quickly—one strong game with multiple goals can spark talk of a comeback. Despite the struggles, I maintain faith in my skills and know I can return to my previous heights.”
