Pubs across the UK can now serve drinks until 2am during key World Cup knockout games featuring England or Scotland, boosting fan celebrations and hospitality trade.
Extended Hours for Major Matches
Ministers have approved temporary extensions to pub opening times for up to 13 matches involving the home nations. Venues gain an extra two hours beyond standard closing, reaching 1am for games starting between 5pm and 9pm in the round of 32 and round of 16. Matches kicking off from 9pm to 10pm push last orders to 2am.
This marks the first such extension in a decade for these early knockout stages, with similar measures applied previously for the Women’s Euro 2025 and the Men’s Euro 2024 final. Supporters can now watch up to three additional games in pubs without special applications.
Government Aims to Unite Communities
The changes promote community spirit during the global tournament. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated: “If our boys are on the pitch, we want our fans to stay in the pub. So we’re giving pubs and bars an open goal to serve punters long after the last penalty hits the back of the net. We won’t have fans coming home before football does.”
Industry Welcomes the Boost
Business leaders praise the move for supporting revenue and jobs. Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, said: “There’s no place quite like the pub to cheer on our brilliant teams, and being able to open for longer means people can come together, boost community spirit and enjoy a summer of sport.”
She added that reducing regulatory burdens alongside these extensions will help pubs thrive as gathering spots for national moments.
Kate Nicholls, Chair of UKHospitality, noted that pubs and bars will fill with fans during the tournament’s centerpiece events, sustaining match-day excitement past the final whistle.
